This Is the Quietest Part of This Illinois State Park

Get lost in nature on the Sunset and Sleepy Hollow Trail Loop in White Pines Forest State Park in Illinois.

I've been visiting White Pines Forest State Park since before I could walk. Located about two hours from downtown Chicago, my parents took our family there multiple weekends a summer and well into the fall. Even today, when I smell charcoal, I'm instantly transported back to being a child rollerblading around our campsites or catching my first crayfish in the park's Pine Creek.

As the park is just a modest 385 acres, one would think it would be hard to get away from other campers. Quite the opposite is true. While there are plenty of nooks and crannies to explore, I've found that a short hike on the Sunset and Sleepy Hollow Trail Loop is the best way to get lost in the quietest part of this state park.

While I've grown into quite the outdoorswoman, I was raised with just a modest amount of outdoor time. The 2.3-mile Sunset and Sleepy Hollow Trail Loop is a reasonably accessible trail for young families and new hikers. While not paved, the route is mostly level, with just a few steep sections. For a little thrill, there are a few cement blocks you can hop across (if you choose) to get across a shallow stream.

The highlight is the limestone bluffs that frame the trail. On one side, there are steep cliffs (by Illinois standards), while on the other side, Pine Creek is lined with tall trees and colorful wildflowers. Despite the hike being short, many visitors to the park choose to stay at their campsite, spend quality time with their kids at the playground, or visit the lodge's dinner theater. As a result, I've never encountered too many people on this loop.

In my 30-plus years visiting White Pines Forest State Park, I've frequently spent hours on this trail, not because it's long but rather because there are so many little spots to sit and enjoy a book or simply take in the view. While I've been to many more grandiose state and national parks, White Pines holds a special slice of nostalgia in my heart. It's the sort of place I know I'll revisit in another 30 years and reflect on the decades of memories this trail holds for me and my family.

In addition to the quiet Sunset and Sleepy Hollow Trail Loop, the White Pines State Park Loop and Red Squirrel Trail are worth lacing up your boots for. Alternatively, snag yourself an Illinois fishing license and set yourself up at one of the many fishing spots along the park's creek. Plus, there are more than 100 campsites to choose from, as well as modern cabins that can be rented from the White Pines Lodge.

While White Pines State Park is just a day trip from Chicago, most city dwellers don't even know it exists. If you're searching for some peace and quiet to reconnect with nature, the Sunset and Sleepy Hollow Trail Loop is a great option. What other Illinois state parks are hiding some secluded secrets?
