The possibilities for adventures are truly endless here in Idaho and it seems like we're constantly being bombarded by opportunities to explore. Whether it be a park, nature preserve, hiking trail, or wilderness area, it's always good to keep an eye out for the adventure destinations that can be found around you. Featured here is a place that is by no means a household name. It's a little-known, 160-acre preserve that, in fact, many Idahoans don't even know about. However, take the time to stop and experience it, and you'll be treated to some truly awesome natural scenery!
Formation Springs Preserve is a widely overlooked destination in southeast Idaho. Boasting awesome scenery and unique natural features, it makes for a great destination for your next adventure.
Formation Springs is located near the town of Soda Springs. To get there, take ID-34 north out of Soda Springs. Turn right onto Trail Canyon Road and drive for approximately a mile. The preserve will be on your left.
Originally established in 1989, the preserve consists of 160-acres of wetlands at the base of Aspen Mountain. A trail from the parking lot makes it easy to meander across the landscape and take it all in.
Follow the path and you'll soon discover what makes this landscape so special. The area is covered in terraced pools that have been formed by the cold, crystal-clear springs that feed into them. Made up of deposits of calcium carbonate, the pool-like structures are definitely fun to explore.
And the pools aren't even the coolest part! Follow the trail until you reach a fork and keep right. Stroll for about 20 yards and you'll spot Formation Springs Cave. The underground cave has a small opening that you can actually climb down into, just be sure to watch your step if you do.
Inside, the cave is a lot larger than you might expect. There seem to be three rooms within the underground cave, with the first room being the most open. Exploring other areas of the cave could require squatting or crawling, so use caution.
Perhaps due to its remote location, Formation Springs Preserve is a vastly underrated destination among nature-loving Idahoans. Boasting a variety of unique natural features, you'll want to be sure to keep it in mind for your next family adventure!
