This Is One of the Most Remote Parts of Everglades National Park

This off-the-grid Everglades adventure requires a lot of preparation. But this trail is every bit as rewarding as it is challenging.

Anyone who's visited the Florida Everglades has been captivated by its weathered, subtropical beauty. It was the first national park created for its biodiversity, and today, 1.5 million acres of wetland, forest, and marine habitats are protected. The park is brimming with scenery, wildlife, and opportunities for adventure, and, if you're looking to go off-the-grid, there's one trail in particular that's stunningly remote. Adventurers should note, however, that it's not a hike for the faint of heart.

The Coastal Prairie Trail is an out-and-back trail measuring 7.5 miles each way. It begins near the Flamingo Campground and stretches through the coastal prairie landscape that hugs the Florida Bay, taking hikers all the way to Clubhouse Beach Campground.

Before embarking on this remote yet undeniably beautiful adventure, you'll want to check for updates on the National Park Service site. Currently, the trail is not being maintained due to potential damage to critical habitats. Therefore, expect trail conditions to be overgrown and difficult to follow in some areas. It's also notoriously buggy, with mosquitoes and no-see-ums being the biggest offenders. The trail can be a little tricky to follow at times; there are some nearby game trails around. One way to stay on course is to download the trail map ahead of time with AllTrails+. Long pants can protect your legs from overgrowth and bugs. You'll also want to bring plenty of water, perhaps even more than you think you'll need—there are long stretches of the trail in full sun, so be sure to dress accordingly.

So now that you've adequately prepared both mentally and logistically for your off-grid adventure, the magic begins. As one recent hiker shared, "There's no place like the Everglades." Walking this trail is a journey back in time; this was a road once used by fishermen and cotton pickers. Making your way to the shores of the Florida Bay, you'll move past wide-open prairies of succulent coastal plants and buttonwoods.

Another thing to note: This long, arduous trail doesn't need to be hiked in its entirety to be enjoyed. Simply spending some time in this section of the Everglades will inspire your appreciation for the unique landscape and the people who historically made a life here, despite the unforgiving conditions. So, if you're up for this unusual, remote adventure, you'll be rewarded with stunning views of the untouched coastal Florida landscape.

Of course, this is just one particularly remote area of the Everglades. Many trails within the park are more accessible for all ages. Take a look at this helpful Everglades overview to inspire your next visit to one of the state's most treasured natural wonders.
