This Dearborn staple is famous for its classic Lebanese dishes and was recently given an "America's Classics Award" by the James Beard Foundation - considered the Oscars of the food world.
This award-winning Southfield restaurant has been named Restaurant of the Year by the Detroit Free Press and has been a favorite since long before the region's culinary scene started taking off.

This popular Kalamazoo destination is known for its focus on "locavore" dining, a reference to its commitment to sourcing local ingredients. In fact, its restaurateur Julie Stanley was named Locavore of the Year by by Fair Food Matters. This organization works to improve the physical, economic and social health of the communities it serves through local food.

This spot has a focus on local ingredients at the direction of Chef James Rigato. It hasn't been around too long (it opened in 2015), but it's already gaining national attention. It became a semi-finalist for best new restaurant by the James Beard Foundation.
This Grand Rapids place, which specializes in rustic Italian cuisine, also managed to win accolades fairly quickly after its 2014 opening. It was promptly named restaurant of the year by MLive.com.

This tiny diner made huge headlines last year when Bon Apetit named it one of the country's best new restaurants.
Detroit came fairly late to the small plates game, but it was worth the wait when Selden Standard opened its doors in late 2014. Both the Free Press and Hour Detroit magazine have named it restaurant of the year (2015 - Freep, 2016 - Hour). Plus its chef-owner Andy Hollyday was named a James Beard semi-finalist for best chef in the Great Lakes region.
When this riverside establishment opened back in the '80s, things weren't looking good in Detroit. But the spot, founded by the critically-acclaimed Chef Jimmy Schmidt, made a name for itself for its steaks, wine list, and romantic views. Now under different ownership, The Rattlesnake is still considered a stalwart in the scene.

We mentioned Chef Rigato over at Mabel Gray. Well, he wouldn't have become the standout restaurateur he is today had it not been for his time at The Root in suburban White Lake. He retains his executive chef title there, thus giving diners an exemplary experience.
Once a mental asylum, the cellar of this 100 year old building has been thoughtfully converted into an award-winning Italian restaurant. A family run eatery, Trattoria Stella is a favorite of TV chef Mario Batali whenever he is in the state.
