With its maritime history, great food, and waterfront views, Marquette, Michigan, is a place you can easily explore on foot. If you're anything like me, you'll agree that exploring a city on foot beats the heck out of being trapped behind the wheel of a car in a town where it feels impossible to walk—freeways splitting neighborhoods, parking lots sitting atop sidewalks, big-box store after big-box store lining divided roads. This is why I love trips where I can park my car once when I arrive and forget about it until I leave. Why This Michigan City Is So Easy To Explore on Foot

The compact layout of this charming city in Michigan makes it perfect for walking. The historic downtown is located along the Lake Superior shoreline, so you'll never lose your sense of direction: if you're walking downhill, you're heading toward the water.

The city has also invested a lot in its pedestrian infrastructure. I think the Marquette City Multi-Use Path is the centerpiece. It's a paved trail system that runs along the lake just outside the downtown area, so you can step out of a downtown shop, walk two blocks, and you'll be enjoying a lakeside stroll in minutes. This is what really makes Marquette a standout walkable city in Michigan.

The Best Things To See Within Walking Distance of Marquette, MI

Start your visit at Ellwood A. Mattson Lower Harbor Park, an expansive lakefront green space that's essentially in the shadow of the Lower Harbor Ore Dock, a historic structure once used to load iron ore onto lakeboats. It's one of the city's best-known landmarks and an important part of its past.
From the park, walk 15 minutes north along the trail to the Marquette Maritime Museum and the iconic Marquette Harbor Lighthouse. Walk out onto the breakwater, feel the cool lake air on your face, and watch the gulls circle overhead. You're right in tow, but it feels like you could be miles away.

Where To Eat, Shop, and Relax Along the Way

From here, head inland a couple of blocks to Washington Street. There, you'll find the historic center of the commercial district, with its beautifully preserved brick buildings. Be sure to check out the galleries, shops, and boutiques that keep the city's downtown bustling. For lunch, try Donckers. For more than 100 years, this candy shop and restaurant has been serving up tasty sandwiches and handmade shakes to hungry locals and visitors alike—it's a true Marquette institution. The city's brewery scene is also top-shelf. Blackrocks Brewery, for example, with its patios and fire pit, is perfect for relaxing after a day of exploring.
