This Community-Loved Grand Rapids Cafe Is Serving Up Michigan’s Best Modern Brunch

This spot serves true Michigan comfort food you have to try, with hearty dishes, local flavor, and an unforgettable dining experience.

Strolling down the sleepy Sunday streets in the Swan neighborhood of Grand Rapids, I trust my senses to guide me towards the comfort food in Michigan I’m yearning for. I can’t pick up the yeasty scent of freshly baked bread or the sizzle of bacon on the griddle. But I do see a window box full of jubilant perennials winking at me beneath a pair of blue umbrellas gently bobbing in the breeze. Above them, the white letters stamped across the deeply tinted windows whisper “Breakfast. Bruch. Lunch. Cocktails.” And a moment later, I’m standing in the Morning Belle kitchen, slapped in the face with wafts of all things breakfast.

The Must-Try Dishes You Can’t Miss at Morning Belle

The vibe is instantly fuss-free and colorful, with families seated alongside walls painted with slices of citrus. Friendly faces bop around the tables, gracefully sliding white dishes topped with vibrant eggs, fruits, salads, and waffles in front of beaming guests. I immediately know my husband’s ordering the salmon eggs Benedict, and my son will copy that. I’m getting the quinoa bowl with a fried egg, caramelized onions, and sliced avocado. My daughter will beg for something sweet before settling on a robust tomato soup with grilled cheese. It’s all so decadent and fresh, we’re each raving about our plates from the first bite. This prompts us to gobble down a few bites and then play pass the plate, each getting several mouthfuls of the next person’s order, before finishing off the final bites of our own. It’s moments like these, when you know we’ll be telling everyone we meet that Morning Belle is among our favorite local restaurants in Michigan, and not just for brunch in Grand Rapids.

Why This Spot Serves the Best Comfort Food in Michigan

alt

It’s easy to label something as comfort food, or even to call it “the best,” but for me to label a restaurant as having must-try food in Michigan, it’s gotta have a healthier twist on classic dishes. Then comes the ambiance paired with flavors, kid-friendliness, and a good dose of local lore, which helps, too. I love a place with a good story, and the food to back it up. The Morning Belle was founded on the concept of a better brunch, and they do it by inviting the entire community to the table. The cafe is intentionally diet-inclusive, offering menu options for vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, gluten-friendly, and dairy-free diners. But it also prides itself on other interpretations of community, by sourcing most of its goods from other local businesses. For example, their coffee comes from the Schuil Coffee Company, a Grand Rapids roaster, and the syrup comes from a family-owned Michigan farm. They also source bread and pickles, mushrooms, and produce from a variety of local growers. Even the chairs come from a grass-roots chair company based in Michigan.

What Makes This Grand Rapids Restaurant So Special

As you can see, the Morning Belle is a Michigan comfort food restaurant delivering on multiple levels of comfort. Not just by offering the classic Michigan brunch dishes we associate with Mother’s Day and Easter morning, and a million other iconic moments, but because it feels as good as it tastes when you know every single forkful you eat helps support the Grand Rapids community.

Foodie or not, if you’re looking for the best restaurants in Michigan, Morning Belle belongs at the top. Its fresh attitude, fresh ingredients, and fresh perspective on food and dietary inclusivity are both delicious and commendable. Over the years, it’s become one of my favorite brunch spots in the Midwest.
