Forget Fast Food, Because the Smashburger at Hugh-Baby’s BBQ in South Carolina is King
This classic counter-service eatery has smashburgers down to a science. But the real reason you'll keep coming back is its authentic Southern hospitality.
If there's one thing that South Carolinians understand, it's the art of good food. And, as the saying goes, good things take time. While fast food may offer convenience, it lacks a certain sense of community. Hugh-Baby's BBQ in Charleston is a good reminder that the best burgers in South Carolina can't be replicated and mass-produced. With simple, high-quality ingredients, this casual eatery has created one of the most winning smashburgers in the area.
Hugh-Baby's BBQ first opened its doors in Nashville, Tennessee with the goal of serving high-quality food infused with Southern hospitality. Founder Pat Martin (of Martin's Bar-B-Que Joint fame) wanted to pay homage to all of his favorite small-town eateries of his childhood, and when you visit, you'll feel comforted by this familiar counter-style service. Hugh-Baby's now has three thriving locations in Nashville plus one in Charleston, South Carolina, on Saint Andrews Boulevard.
All the food at Hugh-Baby's is created from scratch, daily, and you really can tell. The burgers are crafted from a blend of premium beef and come in five varieties plus a veggie burger option. You can't go wrong with the classic cheeseburger, served with American cheese, pickles, lettuce, onions, tomatoes, and Comeback sauce, but, if you want to get the best of all that Hugh-Baby's has to offer, consider the BBQ Burger. This special features a beef patty and American cheese plus slow-smoked pulled pork, grilled onions, and Hugh-Baby’s famous BBQ sauce.
In addition to burgers and BBQ, you'll also find four different varieties of hot dogs on the menu. As stated on the website, these are "an ode to the quintessential gas station hot dogs of our youth," and while the concept may be simple, the taste is decidedly gourmet. Pair your order with a side of chili cheese fries plus fresh-squeezed lemonade or a hand-spun shake and you'll really take your experience to the next level.
Add to the growing list of reasons to visit Hugh-Baby's BBQ another important quality: exceptional service. Reviewers rave about the friendliness and hospitality of the staff, who will go out of their way to ensure your visit is a good one, whether it's your first time in or you're a regular.
We'll leave you with one last tip: If you're at all tempted by the milkshakes, go ahead and order a strawberry shake. You won't regret it!
