Every year during an October weekend, barbecue competitors from across the country and world converge in Lynchburg, Tennessee to wield their grilling and smoking expertise in a final competition for the year. What’s that? But this is South Carolina, you say? Why yes — we haven't gotten confused. We had to let you know about one of the best barbecue restaurants near Charleston that placed 10th overall in the 2019 Jack Daniels World Invitational Barbecue Championship!
Perfectly positioned just off I-26, Smokin' Gringo's is a great roadside stop when traveling through South Carolina. It's also directly across the road from a gas station, so you can also fill up while getting a bite to eat, all in one convenient stop!
This is a unique, fun spot, with shipping containers that have been painted bright colors and converted into restaurant space. "Gringo" is the name the owner, Mike Bastin, acquired while he was living in Mexico and cooking out of a garbage can smoker he made. The "Gringo Cartel" travels all around the southeast competing for new titles, catering events, and serving some of the best food you've ever tasted.
Mike's daughters, known as "the Gringoettes," also enjoy cooking at competitions and have started competing in the kids’ competitions. They are the 2017 and 2018 Kids Que State Champions. With over 250 awards in all, the barbecue you'll find here is the real deal.
There are many options to choose from on the extensive menu or whatever specials are offered!
Wings are often one of the specials, if you want to just keep it simple ...
... along with, say, a side of Mexican street corn!
Or there's the newest item, the Macho Taco, which features two pounds of goodness on a 12-inch tortilla for those with a really big appetite!
You'll receive excellent, friendly service with a smile.
The only seating available is outdoors, and sometimes there's live music entertainment.
You'll find more information including details on other awards Smokin' Gringo's, one of the best barbecue restaurants near Charleston, has won on its website and the Smokin' Gringo's Facebook page.
This one is worth planning a trip for! If you're too far for a day trip or want to make it an overnighter, check out the fun beached boat you could stay in. Or find a cool Vrbo nearby!
