North Dakota is a bit... well, rural. This quiet little state has a total population of well under a million people, making the whole state less populous than many cities in the U.S.; don't let this hole-in-the-wall thing that the state exudes fool you, though. For example, there are many amazing rural places to eat in North Dakota, including some true hidden gems that exist off the beaten path.
Take, for instance, Gundy's Bar & Grill, a little mom-and-pop hole-in-the-wall where the service is great and the food is even greater. Located out in Medina, this small-town North Dakota restaurant perfectly illustrates what it means to be a small-town diner and dive.
From the moment you wander on in (from no matter where - everyone's welcome at the tables here), you'll recognize this place as somewhere that oddly reminds you of home - even if you're not even in your home state. It's got that every-bar charm that most spots strive to be, and it does it completely effortlessly.
I'm pretty sure that, at this point, there isn't a single thing on the menu that'll do you wrong. My favorites include, of course, the classic burger and fries, or maybe a to-die-for mushroom and Swiss is how I'm feeling. It all depends - what are you in the mood for?
Other incredible options include some of the best steak you've ever had, loads of comfort food, and so much more. Like I said... it's impossible to go wrong when it comes to Gundy's.
The town of Medina is one of those small towns in North Dakota that are totally worth visiting, in part thanks to places like this one. You'll find that it's an amazingly unique place with plenty to do, see, and experience - as well as eat! After all, our American culture revolves quite a bit around food, and it's something we all strive to find the best of.
Other than the food, another favorite aspect of this place for me is the free - yep, FREE - pool and darts. If you're a fan of either game (or both, both is good) you might just find yourself here for a while challenging total strangers (let's call 'em soon-to-be friends instead) to a game or two. The vibe here is friendly and upbeat, and you'll feel it from the other patrons as well - as long as there are any present while you're here!
Each Friday and Saturday, there are brand-new specials to look forward to, so be sure to be on the lookout for those. Gundy's is so off-the-beaten-path that it doesn't even have a designated website, but the eatery does have an official Facebook page where you can keep track of specials, hours, and more.
