New Jersey is a very diverse state but some of the stereotypes are true...we've got the second-highest Italian population (second only to New York) in the United States. As of the 2000 census, the Garden State was home to over 1.5 million Italian-Americans, making up 17.9% of our population. For comparison, New York is home to 2.7 million Italian-Americans, but that's only 14.4% of their population. Many of us are proud of our Italian heritage and the non-Italians among us will often agree that Italian food is fantastic. Luckily, quality Italian food can be found all over the state. One of the best places to find it (and other Mediterranean foods) is at this amazing market...
Jerry's Gourmet (also known as Jerry's Homemade) is a massive market that offers up a wide selection of both homemade and imported Italian and Mediterranean foods. Everything is authentic.
You'll find pasta, sauces, oils, vinegars, meats, sweets, teas, wines, and plenty more.
Their pasta selection is comprised of only the finest Italian, 100% durum flour pastas. There are over 20 varieties.
Many of their sauces are homemade, and rank among the best jarred pasta sauces in the country. You can also find them at gourmet groceries, like Zabar's in NYC. Try the marinara, puttanesca, or fra diavolo.
They offer a diverse selection of Extra Virgin Olive Oils from Sicily, Tuscany, Veneto, Puglia, Spain and the world's best olive growing regions.
Jerry's offers a massive selection of imported cheeses (Aged Asiago Di Allevo, Parmigiano Reggiano, Auricchio Provolone, Vantia Caciocavallo...), and they make their own fresh Mozzarella and Scamorza every day...almost hourly!
Then there are the sweets, treats (plenty of Panettone), teas, Italian coffees, and wines. They've got one of the largest selections of Italian wines in New Jersey.
The breads and gift baskets are fantastic...
But one of the things we love most is their selection of prepared foods. You'll find everything from Baked Ziti to Chicken Francese. Pick them up for lunch or dinner!
For your convenience, they even deliver! Although, I'd rather give them a visit in person. Address: 410 S Dean Street, Englewood, NJ, 07631. For more authentic Italian eats in New Jersey, check out this cafe.
