Where This Rail Trail in New Jersey Is and What Makes It Unique

You'll find the West Essex Rail Trail in northern New Jersey. The 3-mile (out-and-back) trail spans Essex and Passaic Counties, running through the towns of Verona and Cedar Grove. Trail access is on Fairview Avenue in Verona.

What makes this trail stand out is its unique history. It sits on the former rail bed of the Caldwell Branch of the Erie-Lackawanna Railroad, featuring original artifacts like vintage mile markers leading to Jersey City. There's also an old railroad trestle crossing the Peckman River.

The terrain is gravel and dirt, but it's relatively hard-packed, making for an easy stroll. Elevation gain is less than 250 feet, so families and beginners are welcome.

What You’ll See Along the Way

Despite its location in an urban, densely populated area, the West Essex Rail Trail feels like a secluded escape. The dense woods around Cedar Grove Community Park provide a habitat for wildlife, such as deer, that hikers frequently spot. Another highlight is crossing the Peckman River bridge, which offers views of a small waterfall. It may not be one of the tallest waterfalls in New Jersey, but listening to the sound of the flowing water is relaxing nonetheless. The bridge also passes Devil's Hole, a deep natural pool fed by a larger waterfall. (While it's beautiful to look at, Devil's Hole is not for swimming, as it is deceptively deep with a dangerous current. Please stay on the trail to enjoy the view!)

Parking for the West Essex Rail Trail is available at the Robert J. O'Toole Community Center lot, located across the street from Cedar Grove Park. The trail is accessible year-round, known for beautiful fall colors and vibrant spring blooms. Leashed dogs are welcome.
