Cyclists are spoiled for choice in New Jersey, with some great bike paths both in major cities and in small-town parks and nature preserves. However, you've never seen anything like the Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park Trail. This massive 69-mile bike trail in New Jersey is the state's longest trail, making it an ideal extended adventure for cyclists - and it passes through three of the state's top cultural centers: New Brunswick, Trenton, and my favorite town of Princeton. That means that as you take the bike trail in New Jersey, you'll have many opportunities to stop, take in the sights, and then get back on the trail. Is this 69-mile adventure something you're up to? If not, this trail has many entry and exit points along the way, meaning it can be as intense or relaxing as you want it to be!
While the trail can be taken from either side, the trailhead/terminus at one end is in New Brunswick - the home of historic Rutgers University.
From there, you'll embark on a lengthy journey on a smooth, well-maintained bike trail that will take you all the way to south Jersey.
This trail is almost entirely along the water, which means there are many opportunities to see wildlife on your trip.
You'll pass over many bridges and other structures along your way, but the entire thing is easy to travel for experienced cyclists.
You'll definitely want to make time to stop in Princeton, as the trail passes very close to the college and downtown.
As you head to South Jersey, you'll see a lot more historic buildings as you head into small-town areas.
Some of the bridges you'll traverse will also take on a much more rustic appearance.
The terminus of the trail is in Frenchtown, but the last major city you'll visit is Trenton - the state's Capitol, and home to many of its most famous historic buildings!
