One of New Jersey’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar

There's so much more to Margate City than Lucy the Elephant, and this quirky town in New Jersey is just waiting to be discovered.

Even if you come to the Jersey Shore every summer like I do, it's almost impossible to see all of it. There are so many hidden corners of this Garden State region, especially towards the south of the state and on the barrier islands, that it's no surprise one quirky town in New Jersey continues to fly below the radar. Despite its lower profile, Margate City is really one of the best hidden gems in New Jersey, and from your first visit, you're likely to be swept away by its unique atmosphere and historic charm.

Margate City has a population of over 5,000 and is a year-round destination compared to many of its neighbors. But despite that, it's gained quite a reputation for one particularly famous attraction that can be found within its borders. The problem is, many people drop in, get their selfie with this one irresistible sight, and then head on to a busier city. Well, that's their loss, because those who spend a day or two in Margate City are likely to discover just why this quirky small town in New Jersey is the definition of a Garden State original.

Where Is Margate City and Why Is It So Unique?

Margate City is one of those towns in the Jersey Shore that sort of blends together with other spots in the area. Just across the bay from the more-famous Ocean City, it's located south of Atlantic City and is easy to pass by between the bigger-name cities. But that makes it a hidden gem — especially as its bayside environment kind of feels like the closest you'll get to exploring Venice in New Jersey.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

If the town has one iconic spot, it's Lucy the Elephant. This classic roadside attraction, the oldest in the United States, has been completely restored. The massive sculpture has been a restaurant and a hotel over the years, is occasionally turned into an Airbnb, and is one of the most popular photo opportunities in the state. It's a true New Jersey original, that's for sure!

Once you've gotten your elephant picture, make sure to drop by the Margate History Museum, which features a fascinating look back at the city's creation and what gave it the unique flair it's known for today. One of the city's signature sites isn't technically within the borders — but those who walk along Margate's beautiful beach will likely see the Ventnor City Fishing Pier jutting into the water. It's the country's longest, and it's within walking distance of Margate City and well worth a visit for the view.

Why It's Still Flying Under the Radar

Margate City has a lot going for it, including some of the best historic houses in New Jersey lining the city and facing the beach. But many tourists don't go south past Atlantic City, and those that do usually make a beeline for Cape May. That makes Margate City's charms a hidden gem — except for one weekend a year. Keep an eye out for Beachstock, the town's spectacular beach festival, taking place on June 27th, 2026.

Those who visit this quirky town in New Jersey are usually surprised by just how unique and welcoming it is.
