Whether you lived in Montana decades ago or you're still living here in the Treasure State, you were likely exposed to many classic dishes during your formative years. Montana is one of the beef capitals of the U.S., so of course, burgers and steak are on lots of menus.

But there's so much more to Montana's dining than beef. From homemade ice cream and pie to juicy cherries, here are nine foods that are so quintessentially Montana, you simply can't find them on the same caliber anywhere else.

1. Steak

Whether it be a filet from a famous steakhouse or a sirloin fresh from the grill, steak has always been a staple in Montana. Considering we have a thriving cattle industry, this makes sense. Whether you enjoy a medium-rare ribeye or juicy filet mignon, there are plenty of restaurants out here that will accommodate your tastes. We like Beef N Bone in Ulm and The Montanan Steakhouse in Lincoln.

2. Trout

alt

Not all Montanans love this tasty freshwater fish, of course—but if you grew up in a fly fishing family, it was almost certainly a dinnertime staple. Whether you enjoy it grilled, baked, or even fried like a fried fish sandwich, there are plenty of bucket-list-worthy eateries that will serve it up for you. Of course, you can go to chains like Cracker Barrel, but local spots like The Buffalo Bar in West Yellowstone.

3. Huckleberry Pie

alt

Huckleberries are so prominent in Western Montana that it's common to see this scrumptious dessert at summer BBQs, parties, and on restaurant menus. We are very thankful for this. Of course, nothing beats a homemade huckleberry pie fresh out of the oven, but bakeries like Willow's Huckleberry Land in Hungry Horse or Grateful Bread Restaurant in Bigfork.

4. Chicken Fried Steak

You may associate country-fried steak with Southern cooking in Alabama or Texas, but this delicacy is also well-known and loved in Montana, too. We love it smothered in white gravy next to a side of fluffy mashed potatoes and fresh salad. It's the perfect filling comfort food—you can get it at The Montana Club Restaurant in Missoula or Cowboy's Lodge and Grille in Gardiner.

5. Flathead Cherries

If you grew up in Montana, summer meant waiting for the Flathead cherry season to start. If you were lucky, you stopped and picked some up on the way to Glacier National Park. The sweet, juicy fruits are perfect as-is or can be made into ice cream, pie, and tarts. Some great u-pick farms include Bowman Orchards and Bigfork Orchards in Bigfork.

6. Wilcoxson's Ice Cream

alt

Wilcoxson's Ice Cream has been a Treasure State staple for decades. Considering they're the supplier for nearly every major ice cream shop in the state, it's safe to say they're ingrained in our childhoods. Some of the best local flavors are black cherry, huckleberry, and buffalo chip with chocolate swirls. You can't beat this iconic Montana staple!

7. Burgers

alt

Sure, people all over America grow up eating burgers. But until you've had a Montana burger, you've been eating second-rate meat. You'll find some of the juiciest, most delectable hamburgers at restaurants all over the state, from upscale establishments to drive-thru dives. We can't get enough of Naps Grill in Hamilton, where they serve up "the massive burger" with three 12-ounce patties!

8. Bison

alt

Whether it be in burger or steak form, we love our bison here in Montana... but please, call it buffalo. This one might not be everybody's cup of tea, especially if you aren't a meat lover, but it sure is a delicacy around here. Buffalo has a distinct flavor from beef that's especially rich—perfect for all sorts of hearty, comforting meals. Head to Madison Crossing Lounge in West Yellowstone or Montana Ale Works in Bozeman.

9. Jerky

alt

Whether you grew up in a hunting family or just made friends with those who did, you probably have seen more jerky being made than most. You can find local jerky brands all over, including at farmers' markets, grocery stores, and even at gas stations. It's a great on-the-go snack that pays homage to the state and its beef legacy. M&S Meats Montana and Hi-Country Snack Foods are delicious local brands.

This is a brief list of Montana staples, but it's certainly not a complete one. What tasty delicacies would you add? If you're on the hunt for some more local Montana foods and eateries, make a day trip of it and use Only In Your State's itinerary planner to guide the way.
