When you think of popular foods in Mississippi, the slugburger undoubtedly comes to mind - and that’s how it should be! It was invented in Corinth, Mississippi, after all. The city isn’t going to let people forget where the famed burger hails from, either. In addition to an annual festival held in its honor, Corinth is home to several burger shops that are famous for their versions of this iconic dish. The Slugburger Cafe in Mississippi may not be where this legendary food hails from, but they sure know how to whip them up!
Located in north Mississippi, Corinth is known for hospitality, graciousness, and…slugburgers!
The burger's most distinguishing feature is its fried patty, which is made of beef and a starch-based filler.
A long time favorite, the unique burgers were invented in Corinth back in 1917 by resident John Weeks.
To set his burgers apart from others, Weeks added an unusual ingredient to his patties, and no, it wasn’t slugs. It was potato flour.
Weeks originally dubbed his creation the Weeksburger. His creation was a hit, but the name wasn’t and was eventually changed to slugburger.
The name change seems odd but makes sense when you learn "slug" used to be slang for a nickel, which was the price of the burgers around the time of the Great Depression when the name change came about.
Today, the burgers are as popular as ever in Corinth. The city actually hosts an annual festival to celebrate the iconic culinary creation.
What’s more, slugburgers are served in restaurants throughout northeast Mississippi, including the Slugburger Café in Corinth.
Keeping with tradition, the café’s burgers come topped with mustard, pickles, and onions.
A great place to fill up on the iconic dish, the cafe, and more specifically its fare, is loved by patrons and burger critics alike.
Before you visit, you should know that the café is rather small and fills up fast, so a wait is likely.
Of course, you can always call in your order and pick it up.
While not the only Mississippi burger shop serving up delicious patties, true to its name, Slugburger Cafe is the place to go when craving one of the state's most legendary dishes. Keep your eyes peeled as you travel through Corinth - this tiny shop is so small it doesn't even have a website!
