Even Meat Eaters Can’t Help But Fall in Love With the Menu at This Plant-Based Restaurant in Georgia

Plant-based Latin-inspired dishes take center stage at La Semilla. But what you'll really fall in love with is the vibrant, laid-back atmosphere and opportunity to sample some truly creative flavors.

The motto at La Semilla, Atlanta's forward-thinking plant-based restaurant, is "sit back, relax, and enjoy the possibilities." A quick glance at the Latin-inspired menu will show that the possibilities really are endless for these vegan-friendly dishes. But being vegan isn't exactly at the heart of this restaurant; rather, it's all about serving up quality food for the community. Diners walk away feeling like they've experienced a quality restaurant, perhaps even forgetting that it just so happens to be vegan.

La Semilla, which means "the seed," began a few years ago as a humble pop-up restaurant in Atlanta known as Happy Seed. Co-owners Sophia Marchese and Reid Trapani wanted to infuse plant-based dining with rich Cuban culinary traditions, and the results have been astounding. Familiar dishes such as empanadas, Cuban sandwiches, and scratch-made queso are some of the most popular orders, and by all accounts, no one misses the meat or animal products.

One recent glowing review underscores the sentiment that this restaurant isn't just for vegans to enjoy: "I'm not specifically a 'plant-based' type of guy but the food here never disappoints; more specifically it always honestly impresses me. I can't say no to this place, truly enjoyable atmosphere, the bartenders make magic, and the food, again, is amazing."

If you really want to be convinced as to the magic of plant-based dining, we'd recommend the Crunch Wrap, a spin-off of the iconic fast food item that's instead crafted with fresh vegetables, vegan nacho cheese, seitan, and crispy dough. Equally delicious are the Carne Asada Tacos, crafted with seitan asada, guacamole, chimichurri, and almond cotija.

And while the food takes center stage, the drinks come very highly recommended. There's a dedicated cocktail menu featuring favorites like the Semilla Mojito (house rum blend, mint, lime, and soda), the Beach Bunny (tequila, guava, passionfruit, orgeat, and Falernum), and the Pinkies Up (berry apéritif, pink peppercorn, marjoram, rosemary, and grapefruit soda). Beverages can be made alcohol-free, plus there are wine and beer options as well.

When you're ready for dessert, you'll have to make the impossible decision between Guava Flan, Apple Empanada, and Frituras de Calabaza.

After sampling this impressive menu, you won't just be convinced that vegan dishes can stand up to their meat-based counterparts; you'll be celebrating the ingenuity of cooking with local, seasonal ingredients. And we bet you'll be planning your return visit in no time! La Semilla is open for dinner Tuesdays through Sundays, beginning at 5:00 p.m. Reservations are highly recommended.
