Visit This Northern California Restaurant for a Bowl of Soup So Good, You’ll Crave It All Winter Long

When it's cold outside, sometimes there's only one thing that sounds good: soup. If you're looking for the best bowl, head to San Francisco's very own Wooly Pig.

If it helps establish my soup-loving credentials, there was a time not very long ago when I seriously considered getting the words "SOUP LIFE" tattooed across my knuckles. From delicate phở ga to indulgent chowder, soups are delicious entry points to culture, often embodying the key preparations and sensibilities that typify a regional cuisine. We deliver soups to friends and family when they're under the weather, rely on them to get us through periods of financial stress in college and beyond, and crave them as a source of comfort.

Whether it's our coziest fleece or an old television series, we reach for certain things when life gets difficult. A bowl of soup helps fortify us in the face of our challenges, and let's face it: life is pretty stressful right now. That's why I knew I'd come upon something special when I first ate at Wooly Pig, an eatery off the T in San Francisco's Dogpatch neighborhood.

Serving up Asian-fusion fare, Wooly Pig made its 2011 debut in Inner Sunset before relocating to its present-day location. When the weather permits, take your meal outside, where a comfortable patio provides seating and protection from passing traffic. Otherwise, find a table inside and seek out the old "LOL" sign on the wall, a survivor of recent renovations that often has a short joke written beneath.

Though they're known for their sandwiches, it was their ginger chicken jook and braised beef stew that made me a believer. Both will make you wish you'd brought a container to bring some home with you.

"Jook" is the Cantonese term for congee, a staple of Chinese cuisine and possibly one of the world's most comforting soups. While it's primarily eaten as a breakfast food, Wooly Pig serves its jook all day, so you won't have to rush against the clock to try it, although it will almost certainly have you hurrying back for more. Prepared with long-boiled rice, it's ideal for sensitive stomachs and is arguably as healthy as it is delicious. With notes of ginger, cilantro, white pepper, sesame oil, and a luxurious chicken broth, Wooly Pig's jook is one of those dishes you'll be pining for later.

Their beef stew is equally crave-worthy. Served alongside your choice of seasoned rice or soft French roll, this soup boasts a bold flavor profile. Flashes of star anise, daikon, and ginger brighten the rich broth, and the braised beef is velvety and tender.

If you can, I recommend visiting Wooly Pig with a cooperative friend, allowing you to divide and conquer the menu. Issues only arise when the restaurant offers soup specials — on my last visit, an udon curry came perilously close to thwarting my strategy. Luckily, the prices here are incredibly reasonable, so if you do wind up with a few more plates than you anticipated, it won't break your wallet.

If you've been craving a comforting bowl of soup, I highly recommend visiting Wooly Pig. With its friendly staff, renovated interiors, and tempting menu, it manages to stand out in a city teeming with incredible eateries.
