One of Southern California’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar
Learn all about one of the quirkiest towns in California, filled with unique attractions and small-town charm. A hidden gem worth exploring.
If you are searching for a quirky town in Southern California for your next adventure, there are plenty of eclectic and unusual towns to consider. Places like Solvang, Ojai, and Poway are just a few of the SoCal towns that have something special, but there is another community that tends to fly under the radar—Joshua Tree. Sitting just north of Joshua Tree National Park, this SoCal town tends to get passed by for nearby destinations, but it’s worthy of a trip itself. In fact, Joshua Tree is one of my favorite hidden gem towns in Southern California and a place that's truly one of a kind.
Where Is Joshua Tree and Why Is It So Unique

The town of Joshua Tree sits where the higher Mojave Desert and the lower Colorado Desert ecosystems meet. It serves as the gateway to Joshua Tree National Park and is approximately 45 miles east of Palm Springs.
While the town of approximately 6,700 residents is best known for its proximity to the national park, Joshua Tree's unique scenery and Bohemian vibe make it stand out. You’ll almost feel like you are walking through another world with spiky yucca trees and massive monzonite boulders around every corner. At night, take a short drive outside of town, and you'll be mesmerized by the bright and vibrant night sky. Joshua Tree is one of the best places for stargazing in Southern California after all.

And the scenery is just the beginning of why this California town stands out. Joshua Tree is known for attracting artists, musicians, spiritual seekers, and those who desire a few hours in a unique destination. It’s a place where you can go to unleash your creativity, search your soul, and simply be yourself.
The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town
Yes, the town's main attraction is nearby Joshua Tree National Park, but there is so much more to discover—including some places that make you scratch your head. One of the quirkiest places, and a favorite roadside attraction in downtown Joshua Tree, is the World Famous Crochet Museum. This colorful museum is where you can view an extraordinary collection of crocheted animals and other objects. Even the museum's tiny exterior is a sight in itself, making you stop and stare.
I also love to recommend the Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum, which is home to creations made from recycled junk. Free of charge and open during daylight hours, this unique outdoor museum is where you’ll find sculptures and displays made from old items, creating oddities that will make you question their inspiration.
Approximately 20 miles outside of Joshua Tree is also The Integratron, a historic 38-foot-tall, 55-foot-diameter dome building created by George Van Tassel. He said this peculiar building was based on the design of Moses’ Tabernacle, Nikola Tesla’s writings, and telepathic directions from extraterrestrials. The building's dome was designed to be an electrostatic generator for rejuvenation and time travel. Today, you can walk around the Integratron’s grounds and gift shop, or attend a private or public sound bath in the sound chamber.
Plus, not far from the Integratron is another quirky attraction you don’t want to miss—the Giant Rock. This is just as the name suggests: a giant rock in the middle of the desert that covers 5,800 square feet and is seven stories tall. This boulder was once a gathering place for UFO believers in the 1950s, and there are many stories and rumors about this rock. Today, many people strongly believe the rock is connected to aliens.
Why It’s Still Flying Under the Radar

Joshua Tree often gets overlooked for surrounding towns and the national park, but this small Southern California town is the type of place that, as soon as you visit, you’ll discover why it is so loved. It has a vibe that’s truly unique, a draw to individuals looking for something a little different, and attractions in town and nearby that make you stand still and wonder. The community of Joshua Tree is like a hidden gem in the desert, and we don’t blame the locals for wanting to keep it that way.
