The Overstuffed Sandwiches From This Northern California Deli Are the Stuff of Dreams
Looking for the sandwich of your dreams? Head to San Francisco's Lucinda's Deli and More near Alamo Square. The creations here will change your life.
Though I hail from Washington State, I credit San Francisco with my first life-changing sandwich. Before, I'd been something of a sandwich cynic — I guessed that a couple of good ones probably existed, but I associated them more with a hasty outdoor meal than a food worth savoring. As far as I can tell, the deli I visited then is now long gone, but one bite of its turkey-on-baguette goodness was enough to make me a lifelong believer.
Nowadays, I see sandwiches as a high-wire culinary art. That is to say, the bad ones are bad, but the good ones are transcendent. Luckily for us all, in recent years, more and more creatives have applied their prodigious talents to the humble sandwich, elevating this lunchtime fare to its rightful heights.
Tucked in San Francisco's Alamo Square, Lucinda's Deli & More is doing just that.
Prepare yourself for a line if you visit Lucinda's at lunchtime. With so many regulars, there's a genuine atmosphere of camaraderie outside Lucinda's, a bubbly energy that's fed — no pun intended — at least in part by the feverish pace of the sandwiches being churned out. If you were bummed out about not being able to build your own sando, don't be. For one, the ten sandwiches on Lucinda's menu are expertly composed. Secondly, and take my word for it, you'd feel like a real wet blanket holding up the folks behind you as you deliberate between cheddar and Swiss cheese. Trust the process and the options on offer. They've not earned their following on looks alone.
But there's no denying that looks are part of every dining experience. After all, we eat with our eyes, too. In this regard, Lucinda's fare is hard to beat. The ingredients are fresh and their colors are saturated — they make me hungry just looking at them. Now, truth be told, I don't believe more fillings are always better when it comes to sandwiches. So long as the components are sourced from high-quality suppliers, less really can be more. But Lucinda's sandos aren't crafted for the sake of indulgence alone. While they're large enough to make your eyes go wide, every ingredient feels justified. Proportions of meat, veg, cheese, and spread are considered, as is their ratio of bread to fillings. The result is a transcendent sandwich experience, one you'll want to repeat over and over.
Though I remain a sheepish meat-eater, I'm obliged to say that my favorite sandwich at Lucinda's is the vegan Avo Smash. It's a testament to the care and intentionality of these creations that a sando of pepperoncini, pickled red onion, pickled cucumber, tomato, avocado, arugula, and creamy cashew romesco could hold its own against pastrami.
If you're hungry in Alamo Square, I highly recommend visiting Lucinda's Deli & More. This takeout gem may be Northern California's most delicious secret, exuding a hole-in-the-wall je ne sais quoi that gives me a perennial sense of discovery whenever I swing by. Just be advised: Lucinda's overstuffed creations may ruin you for lesser fare, so come ready for a personal sandwich renaissance.
