Virginia boasts many haunted attractions, many of which have an extensive and often troubling history. For a prime example of this, look no further than Williamsburg's Peyton Randolph House. Largely considered to be the most haunted house in Virginia (if not in all of America), this seemingly beautiful historical site is not for the faint of heart. Here's more on this iconic location in Williamsburg, which is also the most haunted house in Virginia.
Seemingly charming — if not picturesque — from the outside, the Peyton Randolph House may be the single most haunted location in America.
Portions of the house date back to 1715. This historic landmark was once the home of Peyton Randolph, the first President of the Continental Congress. The house also served briefly as a hospital during the Battle of Williamsburg.
This house, which is full of fascinating history, may be most renowned for its paranormal activity. It is said that during guided tours, visitors unexpectedly fall ill before entering the house.
Perhaps visitors are picking up on a foreboding nature that has cursed the house since its beginnings. Throughout the course of its existence, the house has seen more than 30 deaths, ranging from freak accidents to bizarre medical issues.
Paranormal activity isn't a new phenomenon at the Peyton Randolph House. During his stay at the property in 1824, French General Marquis de Lafayette reported, "Upon my arrival, as I entered through the foyer, I felt a hand on my shoulder. It nudged me as if intending to keep me from entering. I quickly turned, but found no one there."
The following quotation has been sourced from the website Colonial Ghost.
There are countless tales of similar troubling occurrences, ranging from ghostly figures inside the house to disembodied voices. Needless to say, this site is a main stop of Colonial Williamsburg's Haunted Tours.
Should you visit this historic site, be warned that you may encounter more than you signed up for.
