The stunning home was constructed in 1738, and additional rooms were later added on. It served as a private residence for centuries, and in the 1940s, was donated to the town of Oyster Bay.

The home's owner, Samuel Townsend, was a Patriot who favored American independence. Nevertheless, he and his family were forced to host a group of British officers in their home.

Resist could have meant imprisonment or execution, so Townsend welcomed the officers with open arms. Later, Samuel's son Robert was to become a spy working against the British. He provided valuable information about troop movements to General George Washington.

The museum is a great snapshot of what life was like in the colonial era. The rooms are set up to reflect family life of that time, and there are also interactive exhibits.
