A Trip To This Little Known Historic Ruin In Missouri Is Truly One In A Million

History doesn't always have to come from a book or even a television show. Sometimes we can experience a piece of the past up-close, allowing our imagination to take us back decades - or even millions of years - in time. For a short but sweet trail that leads to a historic ruin in Missouri, make your way to Elephant Rocks State Park.

Just about everyone in Missouri likely has heard of Elephant Rocks, magnificent rock formations that date back millions of years and that look like elephants in a circus line.

However, did you know that Elephant Rocks State Park in Belleview is also home to historic ruins? Yep, and you can explore them when you follow the Elephant Rocks State Park Loop Trail.

The easy trail tallies just one-mile and can get pretty busy. It's one of those trails that's perfect for both kids and dogs, as long as you keep the pups leashed.

If you prefer a shorter trail, set off on the Engine House Ruins Trail. Both it and Elephant Rocks Loop Trail lead right to the ruins.

Expect mixed terrain - paved and dirt, for example - as you make your way to the 1890's Engine House. Elephant Rocks State Park once served as a quarry, beginning in 1869.

All of the granite harvested in the quarry was shipped, by railcar, to various locations in Missouri. When those railcars needed repaired or broke down, they were brought to The Engine House.

The Engine House became obsolete in the early part of the 20th century, eventually becoming the ruins that fascinate visitors today.

After you've explored and snapped photos of the Engine House Ruins, you might want to head over to Elephant Rocks for a bit of climbing and some gorgeous views.

Elephant Rocks State Park also features a playground for the kiddos and food trucks each Friday through Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. (Make sure you bring cash with you.)
