Kentucky has a certain pull to it, doesn't it? It's the nostalgia you feel driving down a winding county road with no particular destination in mind. It's the feel of walking into your favorite restaurant, knowing exactly what you're going to order. It's the sound of live music in the most unexpected places, celebrating our deep ties to the Bluegrass. These places are scattered throughout the state, some off-the-beaten-path and others well-trodden. No matter their popularity, they offer us an indelible connection to our state. Here are some of these places we can't stop visiting, simply because they embody what makes Kentucky so very special.

1. Dewey Lake

Tucked away in Eastern Kentucky's Jenny Wiley State Resort Park, Dewey Lake is arguably the most beautiful place in the state. The 1,100-acre lake lends itself perfectly to an assortment of adventures: hiking, camping, boating, and fishing. Those who want to spend time on the water will find launch ramps at a few spots, including Goble Branch Boat Launch, Stratton Branch Boat Launch, Terry Boat Launch, and German Campground. You can admire the view from the land, too, of course. Pack a lunch to enjoy at one of the designated picnic areas along the shore.

2. Wallace Station

If you could visit just one place in Kentucky that would showcase the state's warmth, hospitality, tradition, and food, Wallace Station would be it. Infused with country charm and tradition, this remote restaurant in Kentucky has won over the hearts of locals and visitors alike. Wondering what to order? The fried catfish is quite popular, along with a side of pimento cheese. Plus, the drive there takes you through Kentucky's divine horse country.

3. Miguel's Pizza

While we're on the subject of food, Kentucky has excelled in the art of pizza. But don't just take our word for it; make a beeline to Miguel's Pizza in Slade. This hidden gem of the Red River Gorge has refueled many hungry hikers and ravenous road-trippers alike. This casual spot invites you to create your own custom pizza or choose one of the specials. Sandwiches and breakfast plates are also on offer. If you arrive early enough, treat yourself to a giant breakfast burrito.

4. Bernheim Forest

The Bernheim Forest and Arboretum in Clermont, Kentucky is a treasure trove of wooded wonders. The 16,000-acre space has been a natural haven ever since it was officially established in 1929. Some of its most noteworthy attractions include Thomas Dambos's famous Forest Giants, the Sensory Garden, the historic Fire Tower, and even a Canopy Tree Walk. This magical forest walk takes visitors 75 feet above the forest floor to an unforgettable view.

5. Paducah

Tucked away on the river, Paducah has everything we love about a small Kentucky town. It's a tight-knit community, but it's not too small either, meaning there are plenty of attractions and amenities to keep you entertained. When you're ready for a quality meal, head to Freight House, located inside a former train depot station, and order the shrimp and grits. You won't be disappointed!

6. Cumberland Falls

Is it possible to visit Cumberland Falls without taking approximately 50 photos? We don't think so! It doesn't matter if it's your first trip or you've been visiting for decades; Cumberland Falls will always stop you in your tracks. And if you think that this waterfall may be a little too popular, we have an alternative for you. Try visiting in winter, or better yet, take a look at the waterfall at night under a full moon and you'll experience a natural phenomenon known as a moonbow.

7. Natural Bridge

Natural arches are typically associated with the landscapes west of the Mississippi, but here in Kentucky, we have our very own. Natural Bridge is one of the most famous. It's located within the Red River Gorge Geological Area and measures 78 feet across and 65 feet tall. The park offers 10 hiking trails (you can pick up some hiking maps at the Hemlock Lodge) ranging in distance from 0.5 miles to 7.5 miles. Looking for something a bit more relaxing? You can enjoy a ride on the park's skylift, which will take you within 600 feet of the bridge. It operates seasonally between April and October.

8. Impellizzeri's Pizza

It may seem repetitive to include two pizza spots on one list, but trust us when we say that Kentuckians know how to make a fantastic pizza. Impellizzeri's has been called the state's best pie, and we invite you to test that theory for yourself. You'll find locations in Highlands, Holiday Manor, Middletown, and E-town (the original). Start your meal with a round of breadsticks and then a Sweet and Spicy Pepperoni Pizza and then prepare to order seconds.

9. The Gorge Underground

Explore the depths of Kentucky's mines and caves on a custom-built cave boat. Select tours are led by guides who will share the fascinating history of these underground spaces. To really elevate your experience, you can opt for a crystal-clear kayak or clear stand-up paddleboard and watch the colorful water swirl beneath your feet.

10. Copperas Falls

We're lucky that Kentucky has no shortage of waterfalls, but that doesn't mean we don't have favorites. In addition to Cumberland Falls, Copperas Falls is a must. This 40-foot waterfall nestled within Clifty Wilderness falls 40 feet into a stunning blue pool of water. Plus, the hike to get there is just as rewarding as the waterfall itself. This 3.1-mile out-and-back trail follows Copperas Creek, sometimes requiring hikers to cross over the water a few times. Therefore, it's best to wait for milder conditions before attempting to hike it. Bookmark this one for the spring!
