The Can’t-Miss Kentucky Hike for Every Nature Lover’s Bucket List

The Copperas Falls Trail is a 3.1-mile out-and-back trail that leads to Copperas Falls, a beautiful 40-foot waterfall. It is in the Clifty Wilderness in eastern Kentucky. The trail is unoffical but well-worn and leashed dogs are welcome.

Kentucky has stunning waterfalls, especially in its eastern and northern regions. There's Anglin Falls near Mount Vernon, a 75-foot stunner, and Tioga Falls near West Point, an impressive 130-foot drop. Of course, there's also Cumberland Falls, the "Niagra of the South," an incredible 125-foot-wide waterfall known for its roaring sounds and breathtaking beauty. I love waterfalls for their beauty and sounds; I find the gushing water somehow both energizing and peaceful. One can't-miss Kentucky trail leads to Copperas Falls, a beautiful 40-foot waterfall in Clifty Wilderness.

The Copperas Falls Trail is a 3.1-mile out-and-back hike considered moderately difficult. It is near Pine Ridge, Kentucky, and hikers can park near Red River Road, which is close to the trailhead. The path follows Copperas Creek, and hikers cross the creek several times on the trail. The water levels in the creek are affected by rainfall, and therefore, it can be more challenging to cross the creek after wet weather. In total, the path gains 167 feet in elevation. It is open year-round, and leashed dogs are allowed.

Copperas Falls moves over a large rock overhang and drops 40 feet into a gorgeous turquoise pool. Native Americans once inhabited the rock shelter behind the waterfall, and the area is an established archeological site. The fall's size is affected by rainfall and may be larger after rain or during spring.

Importantly, the Copperas Falls Trail is an unofficial trail that is not marked or maintained, but hikers describe it as well-worn. AllTrails recommends that hikers download the route before starting to find their way offline.
