This traditional Hindu place of worship is BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir of Chicago.

It opened in Bartlett in the spring of 1953 and is easily one of the most gorgeous structures in the world.

The specific religion practiced here is a denomination of the Swaminarayan branch of Hinduism.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir contains several shrines to different Hindu gods and spiritual figures.

The temple spans 27 acres and also includes a small bookstore and a Haveli (an Indian mansion) used as a cultural center where weekly gatherings are held.

These events include songs, scripture, and dancing. Several important Hindu religious festivals are held here throughout the year, including Ram Navmi, Holi, and Diwali, which serve as major draws for visitors.

The incredible, ornate structure is made from hand-carved Italian marble and Turkish limestone.

It was designed using guidelines from Hindu texts called Shilpa Shastras, which give specific architectural standards for sacred shrines and temples.

The Haveli also features immaculate hand-carved wooden designs.

The roof features 16 stunning white domes capped in gold.

There are also 151 beautifully carved pillars and 117 arches.

The palace also features immaculate grounds to wander around.

The gardens are beautiful any time of year. The white marble and limestone rising up from the snow-covered landscape is almost magical.

Spring and summer is a popular time to visit to see the vibrant blooms in the gardens and the fountains.

BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir is open to both visitors and worshipers.

Visiting hours are from 9am to 7:30pm daily, and tours are also available.

Please note: out of respect for this sacred site and religious guidelines, there is a dress code. Sleeveless tops, shorts, and skirts shorter than knee-length are not allowed; however, there are wraps for visitors to wear offered in the Haveli. Please remove any footwear before entering the Mandir buildings.
