Boise is home to several incredible neighborhoods. For example, Boise’s North End offers much history and the Boise Bench neighborhood is where you can find some of the best views of the city. However, there is another neighborhood that makes for a delightful day trip destination. It’s a place with history, culture, and excitement. It is Basque Block.
Basque Block is only one block in downtown Boise. However, when you visit, you’ll feel a world away.
This unique neighborhood is home to a delightful Basque community. It dates back to the 1800s when it first became home to many immigrants who came to Idaho at the end of the Franco era in Spain to work as sheepherders. It became a safe place and a spot where the Basque people could embrace their culture.
Today, you can visit Basque Block between Capitol Boulevard and 6th Street. The block actually features two historic boarding houses including the Anduiza Building, which was built in 1912. This building is unique because it is home to an indoor Basque handball court called a fronton.
The second boarding house is the Cyrus Jacobs House, which was built in 1864. It was once a popular spot for the Basque people and a social center for those who migrated to Boise.
As you explore, check out the Basque Mural which is located on S. Capitol Boulevard, across from the Boise Grove Hotel. This mural contains three images highlighting the Basque culture. More than 25 volunteers worked on this incredible painting in 2000.
If you want to learn even more about this community and its history, you must stop by the Basque Museum and Cultural Center. There is plenty to learn, see, and do here.
Of course, if you love good food, you will love visiting Basque Block. Try dining options such as Bar Gernika and Leku Ona.
Throughout the year, this neighborhood also hosts several events including the San Inazio Festival, where thousands come to Basque Block every July for music, dancing, games, and more.
There are many fascinating neighborhoods in Boise but Basque Block is packed with entertainment, history, culture, and food. It’s a destination you’ll want to revisit over and over again.
