You’ll Want To Hike This Stunning Trail In Alaska That Has Panoramic Views Overlooking The Bay
If you’re looking for some incredible sights, this bay view trail in Ketchikan is one incredible hike. Taking you from sea level all the way up to the bluffs overlooking the water, you’ll love this easy hike that ends with panoramic views of the area.
The Rainbird Trail is a gorgeous little trail in Ketchikan, Alaska.
It wanders through the gorgeous Tongass National Forest, which is actually a temperate rainforest as well as the United State’s largest national forest.
The trail is located just above Third Avenue in downtown Ketchikan.
It actually parallels the downtown area, providing fantastic views of Ketchikan and the ocean beyond. If you only have a couple of hours in Ketchikan, this hike is fast, and easy to get to.
The trail is an out and back trail that rewards you with spectacular views.
It’s about 2.6 miles long, and takes about an hour to hike. There’s 610 feet of elevation gain, but each step brings you closer to that view at the end.
This is an easy to moderate trail, with plenty of stairs built in to the steeper sections of the hike.
The trail is regularly groomed, but it can be slippery with moss during especially rainy times. The plants you will see on your trek will astound you, as the ferns will come to life with all the rain.
There’s a lot to see on the trail — especially fresh berries.
Bring a wild plants book to spot the berries along side the trail. Salmonberries are prolific in this area, and very delicious. There are also plenty of redcaps to munch on as well. These make a perfect mid-hike snack.
You’ll pass by beautiful sights within the forest, like small, cascading waterfalls.
You’ll also come across plenty of wildlife on your stroll. This area is known for bald eagles, ravens, and sometimes even bears.
This trail is also the perfect walk for those on a short timeframe, like cruise ship passengers.
