If you’re looking for some of the most stunning scenery in Alaska, Valdez has you covered!
With soaring mountains ending in stunning slate waters, this town is famous for its enchanting beauty. This wonderful trail highlights some of the best views you’ll see in the area!
It’s a 5.3 mile moderate trail that showcases much of Alaska’s natural beauty.
There is only a moderate 700 foot elevation gain. It’s an out and back trail that spends a beautiful portion paralleling the water.
The trail runs through an alder forest before opening up into grasslands and meadow.
These stunning views happen 8/10th into the very first mile! After that you can enjoy the wildflowers for the next stretch, before you hit stream crossings.
You will cross two streams before beginning the only real uphill portion on the trail.
The stream's water level can vary, so check your weather conditions! You may also run across wildlife. Many bears, moose, and eagles have been spotted off the trail.
The hike up to the top of this hill is almost the entire 700 foot elevation gain, and it’s a little steep.
Once you get to the top there are stunning panoramic views! You can see the town of Valdez and the mountains across the bay.
You’ll reach Gold Creek Bridge towards the end of the trail.
The trail right before the bridge splits off. This trail leads to the camping area where there’s a fire pit, restrooms, and good lockers.
You can also hike this beautiful trail in the winter! The views are still spectacular, but it is missing the wildflowers.
Whenever you decide to do it, you’ll love it. You can find the trailhead at this Address: Shoup Bay State Marine Park, Valdez, AK 99686.
