The 11 Most Underrated Places In Montana That You Must Check Out

We all know that Montana’s most famous attractions like Glacier National Park, Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument, and the city of Missoula are worth checking out. But the Treasure State is also full of slightly more hidden gems that locals and tourists alike will enjoy.

Give one of these places a visit this summer if you can. Better yet, take a friend from out of state.

1. Pompey’s Pillar

This national monument in Worden (East of Billings) contains the signature of Captain William Clark of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.

2. Big Timber

Beautiful Big Timber is located in Sweet Grass County, bordered by the Yellowstone and Boulder Rivers. It's the perfect place for a relaxing getaway.

3. Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness

If you can't make it up to Glacier, the Absaroka-Beartooth Wilderness near Red Lodge is a good substitute, offering stunning scenery, beautiful hikes and perfect places to camp.

4. St. Ignatius Mission

This Catholic Church from the 1890s is unique because the walls and ceilings have original paintings by Brother Joseph Carignano on them. Also, the views of the Mission Mountain Range in the background are incredible.

5. Our Lady of the Rockies

Did you know Montana has its own guardian angel? This 90 foot statue sits on top of the Continental Divide and overlooks the city of Butte.

6. Quake Lake

Located in Southwest Montana, this lake was created by a 1959 earthquake. It stands as a reminder that even life's tragedies can result in something beautiful.

7. Humbug Spires Wilderness Study Area

This is an 11,175- acre roadless area, located 26 miles south of Butte. Visitors can go exploring for wildlife, ride horses or enjoy some primitive camping.

8. Wild Horse Island State Park

Whether or not you see wild horses (and you probably will), this large Flathead Lake island is a beautiful place to visit.

9. Lewistown

Located smack dab in the middle of Montana, Lewistown has a lot to offer. See the well-preserved historic buildings, explore the Judith Basin or take a ride on the Charlie Russell Chew Choo.

11. Medicine Rocks State Park

Located near Ekalaka, this is one of Eastern Montana's most beautiful parks.
