The Washington Restaurant That’s One Of The Most Unique In America
Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle in Spokane is a unique, historic diner known for its affordable and delicious food.
If you enjoy a unique dining experience, you’ll certainly find it in Washington. From the trapeze artists and burlesque dancers at The Pink Door in Seattle to the zombie-themed burger joint on Vashon Island, you’ll find it all here. But if you’ve ever seen Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle in Spokane, you know that it’s definitely one of the most unique restaurants in America, at least in shape.
The milk bottle is actually one of two of its kind located in Spokane.
Built in 1935 by dairy merchant Paul E. Newport, it was designed to make dairy products more appealing to young people. Each building cost $3,500 to make.
The building operated as a retail dairy for 40 years until it went out of business in 1974.
The milk bottle served as a secondhand shop until 1986, when it was converted into a restaurant.
Today Mary Lou’s Milk Bottle is an old-timey diner that serves burgers, sandwiches and addictive milkshakes.
The prices here are very reasonable, and that makes it even more popular.
The menu here is simple and the food is heavenly.
Everything is under $10.
This is a cash only restaurant which helps to keep the costs down.
In September 2011, the restaurant almost burned down.
The fire started at the rear of either the Milk Bottle or Ferguson’s Cafe next door and ignited a natural gas line between the buildings. Thanks to local firefighters, the buildings were saved, and the owners were even able to save most of the old photos of the Milk Bottle that were hanging inside.
Thankfully the Spokane community still has its favorite lunch spot.
