This Quirky Washington Town is a Beloved Treasure That is Still Lesser-Known
Discover the quirky charm of Langley, Washington—a hidden gem filled with unique attractions, waterfront beauty, and small-town mystery that’s well worth exploring.
Langley is a quirky town in Washington that melds the beautiful views the Pacific Northwest is famous for with a warm and welcoming demeanor, premier access to wildlife viewing, and an art scene that would make even the staunchest snob stop in their tracks. But wait—that’s not even the best part! This town hosts an all-encompassing themed weekend in February that draws Washington locals who love a bit of mystery, but remains under the radar to keep the weekend blissfully crowd-free!
Where Is Langley and Why Is It So Unique?

Located on Whidbey Island in Puget Sound, this underrated small town is over an hour north of Seattle and can be accessed by car or by ferry. During its early days, the town primarily focused on port activities, especially regarding the lumber industry, and eventually agriculture and seafood. As early as 1915, the area became known as an artist hub with the Brackenwood Artists Colony. Since then, the town has retained this love of art and is a certified district in Washington meant to foster artists and integrate their art into the local economy.
It’s easy to see why creative minds would be drawn to this area. For one, the beauty is beyond something out of a postcard, it seems even otherworldly at times—especially when grey whales and orcas come through the area to feed. It’s also a town with an adorably cozy aesthetic. There are galleries, theaters, bookshops, cafes, wineries, and all manner of little shops that sell odds and ends. But, as pleasant and fun to visit as these places are, the main attraction in Langley is its Mystery Weekend.
The Quirky Event That Defines This Town

The family-friendly Mystery Weekend has been held every year since 1984 and is most often described as akin to a real-life game of Clue. For one weekend in February, the entire town of Langley hosts tourists who try to uncover the mystery behind why a (fake) murder took place.
Each year features a new storyline (some with odd but fun themes, pirates and stinky cheese, anyone?) and clues are hidden throughout the entire town, including in the shops and the streets. Participating residents dress in costume, stay in character, and must be quizzed on certain clues found in order for tourists to move on. By the end, you submit your answer, and the reveal of the murderer takes place on Sunday night at the local theater. Those who win receive prizes donated by local businesses and bragging rights, of course.
What It’s Like to Visit This Unique Small Town in Washington
There are two different versions of Langley: the Langley seen during Mystery Weekend, and the Langley seen at every other time of the year.
Langley during Mystery Week is abuzz with excitement, with shop displays giving clues and local participants dressed in a costume that reflects that year's theme. There’s also a special newspaper created for the week, and since the event is held in February, the weather is often grey and drizzly enough to give a mysterious, haunting quality to the whole event.

Outside of mystery week, visiting Langley feels like visiting one of the cutest little oceanside towns in the whole state. It’s great to visit during any season, but each has its own merit. Winter highlights the area’s bald eagle population, spring shows the emergence of whales, summer brings out the feral rabbit population (previously thought to be decimated due to disease, but recently showing a resurgence), and autumn means that the town's cozy potential is at its highest with fall foliage, roaring fires, and quiet cafes filled with pumpkins.
One would think that with so much to offer, Langley would be a top tourist destination. There’s a wild bunny population, bookstores that seem like something out of a romantic comedy, beaches with views of the Cascades, and fake murder, of course. But Washington locals feel lucky that the island town has enough separation to deter casual interest, because then they get to keep the secret of this beautiful town and the fun and quirky Mystery Weekend to themselves!
