The Oldest Bar In Virginia Has A Fascinating History
Here in Virginia, we have our fair share of historic landmarks. Today, we’ll focus on one that’s a bit off the beaten path but certainly worth a visit. The town of Abingdon, situated in southwestern Virginia, is home to the oldest bar in the state. A visit to The Tavern offers a fascinating history lesson in addition to fantastic food and drinks. Here’s a look at what’s in store:
Established in 1779, The Tavern can be found in downtown Abingdon at 222 E. Main Street. This building is the site of Virginia's oldest bar.
In its early years, the building was used as an inn for stagecoach travelers going west of the Blue Ridge Mountains.
The identity of The Tavern changed course throughout the following decades. It served as a tavern, barber shop, bakery, private home, antique shop, and even hospital for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the war.
In 1994, The Tavern was acquired by a new ownership and restored to its original beauty and purpose: a place where visitors from all over could gather for good company and great food.
The fare is a mix of German and American. Entrees range from spaetzle to stuffed rockfish and oysters Rockefeller. There's truly a little something for everyone.
For an appetizer, you'll want to order the famous spinach dip served with andouille sausage and blue crab.
As a nod to the establishment's extensive history, you may feel inclined to order something from the bar menu. In fact, it was under this same roof that figures such as Andrew Jackson and France's King Louis Philippe enjoyed refreshments.
And while the food and drinks are amazing, it's hard to deny that the true appeal of this landmark is its history. Nearly every corner of the restaurant is dedicated to a bygone time.
So, next time you find yourself in the charming town of Abingdon, be sure to stop by The Tavern and step back in time as you enjoy a fine dining experience that harkens back to the 18th century.
