Established in 1779, The Tavern can be found in downtown Abingdon at 222 E. Main Street. This building is the site of Virginia's oldest bar.
The identity of The Tavern changed course throughout the following decades. It served as a tavern, barber shop, bakery, private home, antique shop, and even hospital for both Confederate and Union soldiers during the war.
In 1994, The Tavern was acquired by a new ownership and restored to its original beauty and purpose: a place where visitors from all over could gather for good company and great food.
The fare is a mix of German and American. Entrees range from spaetzle to stuffed rockfish and oysters Rockefeller. There's truly a little something for everyone.
As a nod to the establishment's extensive history, you may feel inclined to order something from the bar menu. In fact, it was under this same roof that figures such as Andrew Jackson and France's King Louis Philippe enjoyed refreshments.
