There is nothing I love more than a walkable Midwestern city. If I can leave the place I'm staying in the morning and find great food, a little adventure, and something new to learn without climbing back into the car every twenty minutes, I'm a happy gal. Add a beach to the equation, and I'm already reaching for my comfortable shoes. That, along with a few more very convincing reasons, is exactly why Chesterton, Indiana, is climbing my list of Midwestern beach towns to visit. If you live in Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, or anywhere within an easy road trip, this Indiana destination deserves a spot at the top of your list.

Why This Indiana City Is So Easy to Explore on Foot

The best walkable cities in Indiana make you slow down without feeling like you're missing anything, and Chesterton has mastered that trick. Historic buildings line Calumet Road, local businesses fill century-old storefronts, and sidewalks connect downtown with parks, trails, and restaurants in just a few minutes.

A leisurely ten-minute stroll takes you from boutique shopping to a gourmet burger, then on toward Coffee Creek, where boardwalks wind through wetlands and prairie grasses. The Commercial Historic District, shaped by the railroad boom of the late 1800s, gives every block a sense of character without feeling frozen in time.
