Indiana is filled with many state treasures, including incredible forests and beautiful state parks. Speaking of parks, our very first national park, Indiana Dunes National Park, was recently established in 2019. Since then, numerous people have traveled from near and far to visit. Indiana Dunes National Park is also the nation's 61st national park. To learn all about this scenic park, including its sandy dunes and why it's such a great national park to visit in Indiana, take a look below.
The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore is a beautiful ecological wonder with 15 miles of beaches that most Hoosiers can't get enough of. This stunning slice of heaven shows just how incredible a natural lake can truly be.
The Indiana Dunes are located alongside Lake Michigan in Northwest Indiana, and on a clear day, you can see the Chicago skyline from across the water. The various beaches that are a part of the dunes offer different experiences for Hoosiers.
For instance, West Beach is a slightly less populated beach, while the main beach inside of the National Lakeshore offers a much more populated, typical beachside experience.
Of course, that's not all that this ecological wonder has to offer. For example, its sandy beaches are perfect for runners and hikers. They're also wonderful places to walk pets.
You'll even discover several trails and places inside the park that are perfect for hiking and camping. There are also a few designated spots for fishing and boating.
After one look at the Indiana Dunes in person, you'll feel like you've stepped out of "The Hoosier State" and relocated to a tropical paradise. It's no wonder this park became Indiana's first national park. Also, since becoming a national park, tourism and appreciation has increased, in addition to Indiana's revenue.
