This Tiny Town in Wisconsin Feels Like a Living Time Capsule

Ready to step back in time? Discover old-timey favorites like supper clubs, Victorian-era homes, and maritime history in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin.

Growing up in Chicago, Door County was a place I heard about quite often. A staple getaway for Chicagoans and Wisconsinites alike, Door County’s Sturgeon Bay has retained its small-town charm across generations. Whether you’re looking for a taste of yesteryear or just a chance to slow down, the community of Sturgeon Bay looks almost exactly like it did when our grandparents were visiting.

With its Historic Third Avenue, visitors can wander through artists' galleries, browse specialty shops, and snack on locally grown cherries at mom-and-pop restaurants. Another highlight of downtown is the Door County Maritime Museum. Here, you can truly step back in time and learn about Door County's impressive maritime history as well as the role it played in World War II. The most fascinating thing I learned during my time at the museum was about the numerous shipwrecks hidden beneath the waves in the bay.

Another way Sturgeon Bay feels like a time capsule is through the lens of the Miller Art Museum. While the museum features rotating exhibits, the second floor contains a permanent collection that shares the story of local Door County artist Gerhard CF Miller. Here, you’ll see both Door County and Sturgeon Bay’s timeless beauty presented in his art.

For a more modern take on an ancient art in Door County, I suggest paying a visit to Popelka Trenchard Glass Fine Art Gallery & Studio. The owners, Jeremy and Stephanie (and their adorable pup!), are warm and welcoming. Additionally, they’ve had incredible careers that are well worth learning about.

Renard’s Artisan Cheese is a great spot to grab a bite. In business since 1961, this artisanal cheese shop and bistro serves up some good traditional Wisconsin delights. I highly recommend trying any dish that features the area’s cherries. I’d also suggest swinging by Door County Coffee for a cup of joe to fuel your adventures.

Of course, no trip to Wisconsin is complete without visiting a traditional supper club. Supper clubs have been around for decades. Both my parents and grandparents remember enjoying comfort food and a Wisconsin old fashioned inside one of these living time capsules. There are a handful of supper clubs scattered around Sturgeon Bay. A few local favorites include Nightingale Supper Club, The Mill Supper Club, and Donny's Glidden Lodge Restaurant.

If you’re planning on spending the night, The Pembrooke Inn is a beautiful 1886 bed and breakfast. Its brightly colored purple exterior welcomes guests to enjoy one of its stunning Victorian-era guestrooms. My favorite part is the homemade breakfast served by the owners, Carla and Brett, in the ornate dining room.

As you can see, Door County offers an incredible blend of cozy accommodations, things to do, and delicious places to eat. Whether indulging in a hearty meal at one of the local supper clubs or relaxing at a historic bed and breakfast like The Pembrooke Inn, this charming Wisconsin destination promises something for everyone.
