History of Davis, West Virginia

Like many towns in America, the railroad really put Davis on the map. When the railroad arrived in Davis in 1884, Davis was officially incorporated four years later, and was one of the earliest timber towns in West Virginia.

Over the years, Davis grew through the timber, textile, fur, and coal mining industries. By 1900, the town had grown to a population of over 2,300 residents and 80 thriving businesses. Like many towns in that era, resources were mined to near extinction, and by 1920, most of the old-growth trees had been removed, and the muskrat, beaver, and mink populations were dangerously low. Fewer than 900 people remained in Davis by 1960.

In 2010, the town saw a resurgence of life, with people moving back to highlight its world-class outdoor recreation areas. Instead of the many years of taking from the land Davis had known all too well, protection and conservation of the public lands took a front seat this time around. Today, Davis thrives as a gateway to nature’s playground, attracting hikers, mountain bikers, skiers, and whitewater rafting enthusiasts from all over the world.
