And Albuquerque is special because it's home to an 18-mile stretch of the Mother Road, more than anywhere else in the country.

4. Aspen, Colorado

Aspen is famous for its skiing, but that just scratches the surface of all that this Colorado town has to offer. And this year in Chicago promises to be one of the best—the city is the official starting point of Route 66, and the celebrations will include festivals, car shows, and more.

6. El Paso, Texas

El Paso is one of the region's most underrated cities.
