12 Hours in Albuquerque, New Mexico: The Ultimate Day-Trip Itinerary

Discover the best sights, bites, and culture to enjoy in just a few hours in New Mexico’s vibrant high desert city.

Albuquerque is a high desert town set in the stunningly beautiful state of New Mexico. It’s the state’s largest city, featuring a modern, buzzy downtown core as well as a quaint, historic Old Town district that dates back to the city’s 1706 founding as a Spanish colony. In Old Town, you can explore a neighborhood adorned with historic adobe buildings, and in the urban core, explore a more contemporary side of this storied city. No matter where you’re coming from, if you only have a few hours available, it can be tricky to determine where to explore and what to do. Whether you’re on a layover at the airport or just passing through on a road trip, here are some suggestions on how to spend a short but sweet trip in ABQ.

A hot air balloon fills with air, getting ready to take off in the early morning light.

A Morning Quest

If you’re lucky enough to visit in the morning when the hot air balloons rise high into the sky, don’t miss the unique opportunity to embark on a private morning hot air balloon ride. Rainbow Ryders is a crowd favorite and a longstanding business in the area, offering flights with breathtaking sights of the city. After touching down on solid ground, grab brunch at the trendy Sawmill Market, which features a myriad of different dishes to dine on, both traditional and trendy in nature.

For those who want to feel pampered, enjoy a spa treatment at the Spa at Chaco at Hotel Chaco across the street from Sawmill Market, which can be enjoyed any time of the morning, afternoon, or evening. Another cute spot to visit for brunch is the extremely Instagrammable (and tasty) Los Poblanos Historic Inn & Organic Farm. Be sure to check out the cute farm shop either before or after dining and browse the selection of quaint local goodies.

Afternoon Adventures

If you’re visiting during the afternoon, there are dozens of destinations to check out in a short span of time. If you’re in town on a weekend, be sure to visit Rail Yards Market, which hosts a non-profit-operated farmers' market every Sunday from May to October, as well as some special holiday events in February and December. Or consider a ride on the Sandia Peak Aerial Tramway for some gorgeous sights of the entire region.

Get some steps in by exploring Old Town, which is home to more than 150 merchants, and Museum Row, for those who are into the arts and culture scene. If you want to be active, embark on a Historic River Bike Tour with Routes Bicycle Tours & Rentals. Old Town Farm at Bike In Coffee is a fantastic place to refuel and stop for lunch while you pedal the day away.

Petroglyphs at the Petroglyph National Monument in ABQ

If you’re interested in taking a little detour outside of town, visit Petroglyph National Monument. Head specifically to Boca Negra Canyon, where you can see more than 100 petroglyphs in about an hour (be sure to pack water and sunscreen for this!).

Another arts and culture opportunity for education and immersion is the Indian Pueblo Cultural Center. Known as the Gateway to the 19 Pueblos of New Mexico, here you'll find a range of interactive, permanent, and rotating exhibits, as well as artists selling their own handcrafted works. You can also dive into lunch at the on-site restaurant, Indian Pueblo Kitchen, to experience authentic indigenous cooking in the tradition of creative, Native American recipes.

Evening Exploits

Grab pre-dinner drinks at Level 5, a rooftop bar with beautiful views for sunset, perched on the top of Hotel Chaco. Or, enjoy dinner and a show featuring a traditional Flamenco performance at the Southwest's first authentic tablao. Those who seek a more “spirited” nightlife experience can explore the downtown area or Nob Hill. These neighborhoods boast a myriad of fun cocktail bars, breweries, wine bars, restaurants, billiard halls, and dance clubs within a walkable span.

If time is on your side and you wish to step outside of the city, check out these exciting day trips from Albuquerque. And outdoor enthusiasts can’t miss this awe-inspiring hiking trail that’s right in town.
