You’ll Be Pleasantly Surprised by This Whimsical Trail in New Mexico

The only thing I enjoy more than a waterfall hike is a trek with unexpected gems along the way. For instance, when you’re hiking the trails at Kasha-Katuwe Tent Rocks National Monument, you discover the most mind-bending rock formations that you can imagine. Or perhaps a fairytale trail with pretty little wildflowers, babbling brooks, and footbridges that soothes your nature-loving soul in the best way. These are the hikes that we live for — the treks that we don’t mind dusting off our hiking boots to explore. Luckily, the Land of Enchantment never disappoints when it comes to these whimsical adventures. One in particular is the Eye of the Sandias Loop in Albuquerque. This quirky hiking trail in New Mexico is filled with lots of fun surprises. 

We’re no strangers to the Sandia Mountains, after all; these majestic peaks are home to one of the most iconic views in New Mexico. Not to mention that the Sandia Peak Tramway is arguably the top attraction in the state. Aside from the tram ride, there are several ways to view the area, including by car, on foot, on horseback, or on a mountain bike. Of course, hiking is by far the most rewarding way to fully experience the region's beauty. 

And the Eye of the Sandias Loop is worth the trek. The four-mile-long trail is inside the Sandia Foothills Open Space Park, a 2,500-acre playground right off Interstate 40. The park is packed with adventure and is home to numerous wild creatures, including deer, coyotes, black bears, cougars, reptiles, and several species of birds. It’s truly one of the best recreation spaces in Albuquerque. 

As for the Eye of the Sandias Loop, it’s considered challenging but equally rewarding. You’ll encounter rock scrambling, a 1,400-foot elevation gain, and several spur trails that could take you off track. So, before you head out on this hike, I recommend downloading AllTrails+ for easy navigation. 

Plus, if you’re doing this hike in the warmer months, be sure to bring lots of water for you and your fur baby, too. With very little shade, don’t forget your sunscreen or protective clothing. My best advice would be to start the trek early, when the park opens at 6 a.m. Your reward? You might see the peaceful sun rising in the morning and be done in time to treat yourself to an ooey-gooey sweet roll from Frontier Restaurant.  

So, what are the surprises on this trail? Well, as you know, nature is art, and I love it when human and nature collide… It’s pure magic! This unique trail feels like a scavenger hunt to discover the next hidden gem. While you trek, expect to see lots of vibrant wildflowers and cacti that pop against the backdrop of the muted desert terrain. What’s more, there are some really cool and jaw-dropping rock formations here. And to add to the adventure, hikers will need to climb or crawl between them.

But what I enjoy most about this trek, and what makes the trail truly special, is the artwork painted on the geological features. As you can already guess from the name, there will be a large eye, painted on one of the coolest formations inside the park. At the center of the colorful artwork is a Zia sun symbol, a sacred emblem of the Zia Pueblo people. The tears are said to symbolize the heartache from the city extending into the natural area. Nobody really knows who left this little treasure behind, but it’s been here since the 1960s. It’s a cool spot to take a break, snap some pics, and soak up the views.   

The good news and perhaps the biggest surprise of all is that you can hunt for more unexpected artwork here. Be on the lookout for the large green footprints, butterflies, heart-shaped objects, rock cairns, and so much more. And if you find yourself off-trail, have no worries, you’ll run into additional trinkets. This is the kind of hike where you’ll feel like you’re on your own little scavenger hunt to discover as many of these quirky little treasures as possible. Naturally, have your phone or camera ready to capture each and every one of them.  

If that weren’t enough, the views overlooking the valley and the city are truly awe-inspiring. You will hear some of the hum and buzz from the highway, but don’t worry, this hike is also secluded, and you won’t run out of scenic spots to enjoy.  

Some of the most surprising adventures are tucked inside low-key destinations. And if you ask me, this quirky hiking trail in New Mexico is one of them. Between the pretty wildflowers, the unique rock formations, the breathtaking views, and the fun, whimsical artwork, this trail is easily one of my favorites. Chances are, you’ll love it too!
