This Restaurant Arguably Has the Best Sweet Rolls and Tortillas in New Mexico
These soft, warm and gooey hunks of dough are baked fresh daily and come out at almost the size of your plate.
Grabbing a bite at Frontier Restaurant in New Mexico is a must-do when you’re in Albuquerque. This southwestern eatery is located across from the University of New Mexico and serves legendary New Mexican-inspired diner dishes, including burritos, burgers, roasted green chile, homemade flour tortillas, and fresh-squeezed orange juice. But best of all, the restaurant’s famous “Frontier Sweet Roll” is a breakfast dish and sweet treat that’s bound to satisfy your stomach and your taste buds.

Frontier Restaurant has been satisfying taste buds in Albuquerque since February 1971. It started as a small and humble mom-and-pop operation, but has since grown to occupy half a city block and seat more than 300 people at a time. People come into town just to enjoy the nostalgic, tasty experience of dining at Frontier Restaurant. Inside, you can admire an impressive collection of gallery-quality art created by local and national talented artists (many of whom feature John Wayne, as the owners are said to be big fans of this Wild West film icon), while you munch on hearty breakfast favorites.

The establishment is casually known as “a place to see and be seen” amongst everyone in town, ranging from University of New Mexico students to celebrities, longtime regulars, and visitors alike. The “World Famous Frontier Sweet Roll” is known among locals as “the stuff of legends.” It has won a few accolades, including Albuquerque The Magazine’s ”Hot Plate Award” in May 2023.
In fact, the Frontier Sweet Roll is so well-known and coveted far and wide that it has its own Reddit page written by those who miss its comforting aroma and fluffy texture. It’s also famous among the foodie folks in the “Albuquerque Foodies” Facebook group.
These soft, warm, and gooey creations are baked fresh daily. The sweet rolls come topped with a cinnamon sugar glaze and a heaping helping of butter, and measure almost the size of your plate. It’s almost as if this sweet hunk of dough in all its buttery glory and size is challenging you to try and finish it (a challenge that’s not hard to accept). Make sure to listen for your number being called, so you can dig into its delectable textures while it’s still hot.

And while you’re at Frontier Restaurant, don’t miss trying the flour tortillas, which are also said to be unforgettable. And if you fall in love with the rolls and tortillas but don’t want to say goodbye forever (or even “see you later,”), we have good news—you don’t have to. Frontier sells these items in bulk, on-site, for you to take home (if you can keep up with conquering these carbs before they get crusty, which shouldn’t be too much of a problem based on their succulence). Just make sure you have enough room in your stomach!
This illustrious outpost is open seven days a week from 5 a.m. - 12 a.m. It’s known as a safe, comfortable, and tasty place for students at UNM to spend time for a late-night study session. And it’s known amongst locals and visitors alike who are invited to stop in at any time of day or night to grab an unforgettable bite (and be sure not to sleep on the sweet roll—or two, or three!).
Fans of old-fashioned diners who are headed through New Mexico or along Route 66 should also have these unique, underrated diners along The Mother Road on their radar for a visit. And there's also this New Mexico mainstay, established in Albuquerque's Old Town in 1974, that still serves some of the best steaks, wild game, and unique local dishes in the city. No matter what you seek for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, there's a strong chance this destination's dining scene will deliver.
