One of Tennessee’s Quirkiest Towns Is Still Flying Under the Radar

As I learn about and explore Tennessee more and more with each year, the Volunteer State is becoming one of my favorite places in the country. Not only are the state's largest cities easy to spend days exploring, but everywhere you look, there's a quirky town in Tennessee worth stopping and paying a visit. One of the best-hidden is probably Dayton, located not far from the banks of the winding Chickamauga Lake. This is one of the most rural, peaceful areas of Tennessee, about 45 minutes north of Chattanooga and midway between Nashville and Knoxville.

Despite its remote location, Dayton is one of the most fascinating small towns in the state. With a population of just over 7,000 people, this charming town has a downtown that feels like it's preserved from a simpler time. All around you, you'll find some of the most beautiful views and peaceful parks in the whole state. And a century ago, this town was home to one of the most famous trials in American history. There's more than enough in Dayton to spend a whole day exploring, and you might find yourself wondering why it took you so long to discover it!

Where Is Dayton and Why Is It So Unique?

From the minute you arrive in Dayton, you'll notice that this small town looks every bit like a slice of classic Americana. From the brick buildings to the vintage murals on the walls, the place exudes charm from every storefront. Independent businesses dominate this downtown, making it a great place to do some shopping for friends back home. Make sure to stop in for a bite at the Screen Door Kitchen, specializing in scratch southern cooking.

The Quirky Attractions That Define This Town

Dayton has a unique place in history, being the site of the infamous Scopes Monkey Trial, where a local teacher was put on trial for teaching evolution and was defended by the famous attorney Clarence Darrow. Today, the town hosts the Rhea Heritage and Scopes Trial Museum, where artifacts from the historic event are preserved. You can also pay a visit to the Rhea County Courthouse, where a statue of Darrow now stands.

Dayton's charming downtown is well worth a visit, but one of the biggest attractions of the area is the nearby Laurel Snow State Natural Area, located just north of the town. Featuring the stunning Buzzard Point Overlook, this largely unspoiled wilderness is full of rustic hiking trails and mountain peaks perfect for a more adventurous hiker.
