The Walkable Tennessee Town That’s Known for Its Art Scene
The art in Chattanooga, Tennessee is second to none and there are plenty of amazing places to see these pieces in this scenic river city.
It has been said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and when it comes to the art in Chattanooga, there is a lot of beauty to behold. This is what struck me the first time I visited the city. Amidst the natural scenery of Lookout Mountain to the Tennessee River, there was also a good variety of sculptures and murals to enhance the look of the city. Chattanooga is known for its art scene, which became very apparent within only a few minutes of being in the city. So, take a stroll down the streets, and here are some of my favorite spots to see the art in this charming river city.
One time, my wife made a brilliant observation. She pointed out that in beautiful places, you usually find an outpouring of art. She surmised that natural beauty inspires good art, and I would have to agree. I was reminded of this as I watched people amidst the artwork downtown on my first visit. Chattanooga certainly is surrounded by stunning scenery, and it evidently has produced an outpouring of creativity. We pondered these things as we sat along the river and enjoyed our picnic lunch.
On return visits, one of the things I wanted to do was explore the art scene a little bit more in the city. There was no better place to do that than at Montague Park, better known as Sculpture Fields. This little park was filled with abstract pieces of art, and I was floored by the creativity found in each piece. As we strolled along, we witnessed towering pillars, optical illusions, and one-of-a-kind sculptures. This was truly one of the best ways to enjoy the art in Chattanooga, but there is so much more throughout the city.
Right along the river is one of the best parks in the city, Coolidge Park. This park features elaborate designs found within the park's carousel. The animal theme continues with the fountain that houses many animals alongside the shooting water that is accompanied by many excited children on a hot day.
Right next door is another fantastic place called Renaissance Park. With the city as a backdrop, the sculptures look even better. I especially like how they are intertwined with the natural settings as you walk. From archway artwork to overhead steel workers, this park is an amazing little gem within the city limits. If painted art is more your thing, then the murals around town are also a sight to see. I personally really love the food ones, but it does make me hungry.
Art in Chattanooga is hidden all throughout the city and is like a fun scavenger hunt just to find it. Part of the fun is just getting out of your car and enjoying a simple stroll.
