Getting outside in Tennessee isn't just easy; it's a way of life. For proof of this, look no further than this list of the five most outdoorsy towns in Tennessee. These places attract outdoor enthusiasts from all walks of life: hikers, bikers, boaters, zipliners, and sightseers alike. No matter what you consider to be an outdoor adventure, you'll find lots of it when you visit these outdoor destinations in Tennessee.

1. Erwin

Located at the convergence of the Appalachian Trail, Cherokee National Forest, and the Nolichucky River, Erwin has adventure written all over it. This valley town is usually one folks drive through on their way to Asheville or Johnson City, but it's not a place to skip over. A fun fact about the history: Erwin was a typo. The town was originally named to honor D.J.N. Ervin, a man who donated his land to the county. But the post office got it wrong by just a letter, and thus the name Erwin stuck. Historically, the town's identity was tied to the Clinchfield Railroad, but today, most people know it for its outdoor adventures. While you're here, visit the Nolichucky Outdoor Learning Institute, a fantastic spot for beginners to learn kayaking, whitewater canoeing, wilderness medicine, and much more.

2. Kingsport

Tucked away in the Appalachian Highlands, Kingsport is absolutely surrounded by outdoor attractions—namely, Bays Mountain Park & Planetarium, Warriors' Path State Park, the Kingsport Greenbelt, and the South Fork Holston River. For an unforgettable experience that really gives you a sense of place, rent a kayak at the Warriors' Path Marina and observe the wildlife. Then enjoy a decadent, delicious meal at Riverfront Seafood Co., a longstanding eatery with awesome views and excellent clam chowder.

3. Signal Mountain

Signal Mountain is just a stone's throw from Chattanooga, but this little town is a dream for hikers. The town is surrounded by peaceful trails leading to lakes and waterfalls, plus the most famous view of all: Signal Point. One of the town's signature experiences is hiking the Rainbow Lake Trail, which leads to the scenic Middle Creek. For a great meal afterward, head to Civil Provisions and Bar, with excellent catfish, calamari, and key lime pie, plus festive cocktails and wine by the glass.

4. Townsend

Townsend is often referred to as the quieter side of the Smokies, and a decidedly less touristy spot than nearby Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge. Scenery-wise, it's stunning. You'll get views of the mountains in almost every direction, calling you to lace up your boots and enjoy a secluded hike. The signature experience here is biking the 11-mile Cades Cove Loop within Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Try it on a Wednesday between May and September, when the road is vehicle-free. After, refuel at Peaceful Side Social, famous for its sourdough pizzas.

5. Sewanee

Sewanee is best known for the namesake college, also known as the University of the South. But those who enjoy stunning overlooks, meandering trails, and a strong sense of community will find a lot to love about this central Tennessee spot. For a real taste of Sewanee, hike the Fiery Gizzard Trail in the nearby South Cumberland State Park. It's a 12.8-mile trek atop the Cumberland Plateau marked by beautiful overlooks, rushing waterfalls, and some of the most secluded, picturesque swimming holes in the state. If you need a pick-me-up, stop by Stirling's Coffee House, a historic bright-yellow home that serves a great cup of coffee. Walking through campus is another must, especially the famous All Saints’ Chapel.
