There is something magical about visiting one of the best candy stores in South Dakota. These shops are not only where you can find sweet treats, but many are also home to some of the best chocolates in South Dakota. Fortunately, if you love all things sweet, we have just the adventure for you. This road trip in the Mount Rushmore State will take you to old-fashioned candy shops (a link to the original interactive map can be found on Google Maps)! This is one journey that is not only scenic, but it is also sweet!
1. Turtle Town (Keystone)
Now you knew we could not begin our road trip without stopping at Keystone's iconic Turtle Town! Opened 30-some years ago, Turtle Town has become a true SoDak go-to, thanks to their mouthwatering hand-made fudge and other tasty chocolate treats. (Pictured is their namesake turtle candy, which is as amazing as it looks!)
2. Mostly Chocolates (Rapid City)
Mostly Chocolates in Rapid City is just that: mostly chocolate. Featuring an assortment of handmade truffles, chocolate bars, and fudge, Mostly Chocolates cautions that after just one bite "you may never think of chocolate in the same way again."
3. Chubby Chipmunk Hand-Dipped Chocolates (Deadwood)
Do you like not having to wait too long before stopping again for your next chocolate fix? So do we! However, the next stop on our trip to find the best South Dakota chocolates is several hours away, so we invite you to stock up on all of the decadent Bailey's Irish Cream, German Chocolate Cake, and Milk Turtle truffles that your heart desires!
4. Palm Garden Cafe & Chocolate Shoppe (Aberdeen) - Permanently Closed
Unfortunately, this chocolate store in South Dakota is permanently closed.
In addition to their treats like the pictured chocolate-covered strawberries, Palm Garden also offers a cheerful dining room and large lunch selection, so if you are craving a soup or sandwich to accompany your hand-dipped chocolate, you have come to the right place.
5. CH Patisserie (Sioux Falls)
The last stop on our great chocolate road trip in South Dakota is CH Pâtisserie, which — as you can see — serves European-style candy and desserts that are almost too pretty to eat. Want to know something else cool about CH Pâtisserie? It is owned and operated by Bravo's "Top Chef: Just Desserts" season 2 winner, Chris Hanmer.
