Enjoy the Simple Life When You Visit This Tiny Rural Community in South Carolina

In case you haven't noticed, here at Only In Your State, one of our favorite things to do is highlight the small towns, rural communities, and villages that often get overlooked compared to bigger cities. For instance, people visiting South Carolina would likely consider heading to the capital city of Columbia to spend a weekend away. But just outside of Columbia, about half an hour northwest, is the small community of Chapin. Known as the Capital of Lake Murray, Chapin is a fast-growing rural community in South Carolina that offers a little slice of the simple life.

In the heart of the Palmetto State, Chapin, South Carolina, is a delightful community that encapsulates the essence of small-town living with a touch of lakeside magic. With its warm community spirit, outdoor adventures, and scenic backdrop, Chapin offers residents and visitors a slice of idyllic Americana.

Chapin's charm is instantly evident through its proximity to the stunning Lake Murray, a vast reservoir that spans around 50,000 acres. Whether you're a fishing aficionado, a boating enthusiast, or simply someone who loves to soak in nature's beauty, Lake Murray has something for everyone. We suggest visiting Chapin, particularly Lake Murray, during July, as people come together to celebrate America in style.

While the lake is a huge point of interest, there are other things to do in this small South Carolina town. Antiquing, for one, is a fun activity to enjoy while you’re visiting Chapin. There are a variety of antique shops to peruse around town, each offering something unique.

If you’re hungry, head over to Farm Boys BBQ, a delicious barbecue restaurant serving scrumptious Southern food like slow-cooked, hand-pulled pork, old-fashioned fried chicken, and more. Or take it international by visiting La Fogata Mexican Restaurant. Here you can find classic Mexican dishes from tacos and fajitas to giant margaritas the size of your head.

For something sweet, check out Chickenbutt Donuts, a local, family-owned donut shop with HUGE flavors like Reese's Crumble, Lemon Glaze, and Cinnamon Toast Crunch. You can snag a wide variety of cleverly crafted donuts, many of which are as beautiful as they are flavorful. Another idea is to purchase a Dozen Kit with a dozen Nekkid Donuts, three glazes or icings, and five toppings to take home and decorate yourself. What a great activity for kids!

Enjoy small-town charisma and lakeside allure when you spend a weekend exploring Chapin, South Carolina. I've visited Chapin many times throughout the years, with family living right in the heart of it. Not only is the community spirit in full effect, but you'll be hard-pressed to find better Southern hospitality elsewhere.
