Operated by the National Audubon Society, the Silver Bluff Center and Sanctuary is situated along the Savannah River in the small town of Jackson and encompasses approximately 3,400 acres of forests, fields, lakes, ponds, and streams that support a wide variety of wildlife.
Visitors can stroll along three different trails to look for wildlife. The longest, the Quail Trail, is a three-mile loop that overlooks the Savannah River. The Tanager Trail is also a loop, two miles long, that connects to an out-and-back boardwalk trail, and the Nuthatch Trail is a 3/4-mile loop near the butterfly garden.
The trails are unpaved but wide and flat, suitable for wagons, strollers, or motorized wheelchairs.
Wood Stork foraging ponds are located where the pavement ends on Silver Bluff Road. Late July through September is the time of year to visit to see these amazing creatures! The only species of stork that resides in the United States, they are found in the coastal areas of South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida.
Wood Storks used to be an endangered species but were downlisted to threatened status in 2014 thanks to efforts to restore ecosystems.
You may also get to see majestic bald eagles, which have nested near the ponds on the refuge since 1994.
With around 200 species of birds at Silver Bluff, it's an ideal spot for birdwatching.
Other wildlife commonly seen at the refuge are frogs, fish, and butterflies.
The butterfly garden is a popular spot for the children who visit the refuge.
A national hidden gem treasure, this is an absolutely beautiful and very peaceful place to visit any time of year. There's always something about fall foliage that's just magical ...
Various events are held at different times throughout the year, such as Storks and Corks and Bring-Your-Own Horse Rides!
After your visit to Silver Bluff, stop by Papa's Kitchen on Steed Street to re-fuel with a delicious down-home southern meal.
