Among locals, it's not so much a secret, but those traveling from other states are quickly discovering the charms of this small, historic riverfront town in South Carolina.

The History Behind This Charming Town

Like many historic towns in South Carolina, Cheraw's story is long, impressive, and complicated. Before European settlement, the region was home to the Cheraw and Pee Dee tribes. The Cheraws migrated to the area in the late 1600s and established a village on the river hill close to town. Because of wars and introduced diseases, the tribe eventually joined the Catawba Confederacy and left the region. By 1750, Cheraw had become a prominent trading village due to its location on the river and its economy built on slave labor. During the Revolutionary War, the town was almost completely devastated, but eventually prospered again due to the corn, tobacco, rice, and indigo trades.

After the Civil War, the town became "a haven for refugees," according to the official Cheraw website. Lots of buildings and businesses were destroyed, but many historic sites can still be seen today. Walking through the Cheraw Historic District, you'll notice plenty of landmarks, including St. David's Episcopal Church (1774), Cheraw Town Hall (1858), Market Hall (1838), and several Victorian-era homes.

Best Things to Do in This Historic Gem

As you can imagine, there are tons of ways to engage in Cheraw's history, like a visit to the Cheraw Lyceum Museum. But one of the best ways to spend time in this small town is being outside. Cheraw State Park is one of the town's crown jewels, offering travelers thousands of acres to explore via hiking trails and bike paths. You can also spend some time on the stunning Lake Juniper, surrounded by towering pine trees.

One of the most popular trails in the park is the Lake Juniper Boardwalk Trail, a 1.2-mile route that leads to stunning views of the water. It's flat, well-maintained, and an excellent choice for all ages. After you've finished your state park adventure, you'll be ready to fuel up at a local restaurant. If you're looking for a family-friendly spot with traditional Southern fare, River's Edge is a popular spot (folks rave about their homemade cakes!). Festivals in Cheraw

One of the town's most exciting annual events takes place in March: the Cheraw Spring Festival. This year, it's scheduled for Saturday, March 28, and Sunday, March 29, 2026, and will include all kinds of festivities, from live music to fine art, craft vendors, delicious food, and more.
