You’ll Never Forget A Trip To The Most Enchanting Town In All Of South Carolina
Nestled in the Piedmont of South Carolina there's a town rich in history and famously proud of its heritage. It's a town that's not only going places, but also knows where it's been; and a town just far enough from the big city to still retain that small town feel.
Clover, South Carolina is located in Northwestern York County very near the North Carolina state line, approximately 12 miles west of Lake Wylie.
The town was chartered in 1887 after a rail line placed a stop there; that stop also included a 5,000 gallon water tower for the steam engine to "refuel."
Over time, as the legend goes, the railroad workers just started calling the stop "Clover Patch." Local lore says a big patch of clover grew near that water tower.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, by 1890 there were 287 people living in Clover.
Today, the Town of Clover has approximately 6,000 residents, up significantly from the 4,000 people who called Clover home in 1990.
For certain, a 33% increase in size in 25 years or so is a major boost to this charming small town.
The downtown historic district includes some 14 buildings constructed between 1880 and 1935, most of them commercial.
But even with the influx of new residents, Clover is still the tiny home town she always was. For the most part folks still know each other's names, and people gather regularly to celebrate the heritage of Clover.
Clover's heritage is evident in two annual festivals that bring residents, both new and old, together to celebrate twice each year.
The city opens it's door each March for their St. Patrick's Day Festival. Live Celtic music, arts and crafts, food vendors and the Leprechaun 5K Run and Walk are a few of the events that bring people out.
It's all fun and games at this spring festival.
You absolutely won't want to miss the festival's annual Dog Show...
...where a group of canines put aside their pride for the greater good of the community...
and compete for Best Dressed, among other things.
In November, the small town hosts the Clover Highland Games and Scots-Irish Festival.
Thousands turn out to celebrate Scottish and Celtic culture. If you're looking for a new spot to don that kilt, then this is it. Spectators are encouraged as well - because someone needs to witness and cheer during the athletics competition.
For sure this small town in South Carolina has all the charm needed to feel like you're home.
If residents really want to experience a little hustle and bustle, it's only 30 miles from the big city of Charlotte and 20 miles from Rock Hill.
We think you just can't go wrong with a town who's motto is, "The town with LOVE in the middle."
