The I-85 stretches through the upstate region of South Carolina, connecting the cities of Spartanburg and Greenville. While it's 34 miles between these popular cities, there are certainly several road trip stops in South Carolina in between. Greer is an underrated city located in both Greenville and Spartanburg counties in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, with more of a suburban feel than its urban neighbors — it's worth getting off the interstate to explore for a day or longer. Here, you will find a charming historic downtown area, museums, parks, and a lake. Not only that, but the community is welcoming and vibrant, and you may find yourself feeling right at home!

Greer, South Carolina, is a city where you will never get bored. To experience the heart of the city, head to Greer Station, its historic downtown with brick streets lined with brick architecture dating back to the late 19th and early 20th century. This area, called Greer Station, spans 12 blocks with more than 40 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. You'll also find a selection of locally-owned boutiques, cafes, and award-winning restaurants, including Rick Erwin's, a steakhouse, and Chef Michael Sibert's White Wine & Butter. And don't forget to stop by the Greer Heritage Museum to learn more about the city and take a walk through beautiful Greer City Park.

One thing that truly sets Greer apart is its family-friendly, historical scavenger hunt, "Toads on Trade." Throughout Historic Greer, 16 metal toad statues are hidden near historic buildings on or near Trade Street. With each one you find, you'll have the opportunity to learn the history of the building where it's found. Not only is it fun, but it's an imaginative way to learn about the city!

Greer is also home to a BMW manufacturing plant and a museum, the BMW Zentrum. This free museum houses an extensive collection of vehicles and displays tracing its historic beginnings in aviation. It's an attraction that both history buffs and car enthusiasts can appreciate.

If you're craving some time by the water, head to Lake Robinson, an 800-acre lake on the outskirts of town. It's a peaceful spot for boating, paddling, fishing, or just relaxing by the shore. Picnic tables are available, and there's also a trail for a scenic walk.
