Escape to These Charming Mountain Towns in Oregon Before Fall Ends
These stunning mountain towns in Oregon are perfect for visiting in the fall.
When people think of fall foliage and fun autumnal activities, most think of the northeastern part of the U.S. with its abundance of maple syrup, history of witch trials, and scenic roads dedicated to the changing leaves. However, did you know that the northwest also offers some incredibly fiery fall colors and seasonal festivals? The Oregon mountains, in particular, are a favorite for those looking for a bit of fall flair amidst varied natural landscapes, local wineries, and small farms.
The following are some of our favorite mountain towns in Oregon we recommend you visit before autumn says goodbye.
1. Silverton

- Location: Near Salem
- Points of Interest: Trail of the Ten Falls in Silver Falls State Park
Due to its close proximity to Silver Falls State Park, this underrated town is a perfect place to visit during the fall with gorgeous fiery scenery blanketing the already stunning mountains. But, if you don’t want to make it out to the state park, try the nearby Oregon Garden!
2. Hood River

- Location: Northern border of Oregon by Mount Hood
- Points of Interest: Hood River Fruit Loop and the Columbia River Gorge
This town borders the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, and multiple farms and wineries. As a result, there’s something for everyone between natural excursions and ventures into local fall flavors with festivals like the Hood River Harvest Festival.
3. Sisters

- Location: Central Oregon near Bend
- Points of Interest: Three Sisters Wilderness and downtown Sisters
Fall is an excellent time to visit this popular western-themed town. The tourist numbers are lower, the weather is cooler but not yet wet, and there are multiple festivals to attend.
4. Ashland

- Location: Southern border of Oregon near Medford
- Points of Interest: Oregon Shakespeare Festival
Ashland is a fun destination any time of the year, but it has a distinctly romantic feel to it during the autumn. Part of this is due to the warm colors and festive flavors, but the enthusiasm for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival also brings many couples to the town wanting to channel their inner Romeo and Juliet (ignoring the ending, of course).
5. Jacksonville

- Location: Southwestern Oregon near Medford
- Points of Interest: Downtown Jacksonville
A town for the food and wine crowd, this charming area is steeped in history and only becomes more enchanting during the autumn. Visit national historical landmarks, local wineries and farm stands, and tiny restaurants that somehow offer some of the best food you’ll have in the state.
6. Tillamook

- Location: Northwestern Oregon
- Points of Interest: Tillamook Creamery and Cape Lookout State Park
A small town with a perfect mix of coastal and mountain vibes, this town has a name made famous by the Tillamook Creamery (which has an excellent visitor center and gift shop). Fall colors are abundant, but a local favorite is scanning the ocean for feeding grey whales.
7. Astoria

- Location: Northernmost tip of western Oregon
- Points of Interest: The Goonies house and Fort Stevens State Park
Popularized in movies like "Kindergarten Cop" and "The Goonies," this historic coastal town has a thriving art and craft beer scene. Although you will get fall foliage and festivals, the weather here will be colder and rainier faster than in other areas of Oregon. It also happens to be the oldest city in Oregon.
8. Rogue River

- Location: Southwestern Oregon
- Points of Interest: Fishing and rafting on the Rogue River
This small, underrated town offers some of the best inland fishing in Oregon (especially for salmon and steelhead). The weather remains perfect for hiking, and water sports are very popular in the autumn.
